Plans for a Chinese bride’s dream wedding, as marvelous as her groom can afford, may have to be put on hold. Authorities say that extravagant and pricey ceremonies do not fall in line with national moral values.
The government is concerned about rising ‘bride prices’ in particular – a goodwill gesture between the two families, when the groom’s family pays a dowry to their future relatives. Another issue is that couples invite celebrities and influential people to their big day to show off in front of guests.

To battle such practices China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs convened a special meeting in Jinan, Shandong province, last week, where officials from various parts of the country ruled that marriage etiquette needs to be reformed.
Instead of lavish parties, authorities want to encourage people to celebrate the event in a more traditional and thrifty way. Moreover, the weddings should “better reflect” the country’s values and goals, and implement the leader’s political ideology, known as the “Xi Jinping Thought.”

Marriages can be a great financial burden and sometimes the groom’s family can land themselves in serious debt. Prices reportedly start from 100,000 yuan (around $14,500), with some costing vastly more. Last year, an 18-year-old girl in China’s eastern province of Fujian received 2.88 million yuan ($400,000) as a gift for her engagement, according to CGTN.
However, initiatives targeting centuries-long traditions have already sparked a public backlash. An earlier move targeting traditional burials and promoting cremation as the only method of disposal of bodies enraged locals in Jiangxi province in July. People were even trying to stop the ordered destruction and seizure of coffins by climbing inside of them, but were forcefully pulled out.

What do you get the bride who has everything?
Beyoncé.
A performance by the pop star at Oberoi Udaivilas hotel in Udaipur — she played Crazy In Love and Perfect — was one part of the uber-lavish nuptials, involving two of India's richest families, that has been labelled "the big, fat Indian wedding".
The 37-year-old singer performed as part of the pre-wedding entertainment ahead of Wednesday's ceremony, which will see Isha Ambani marry Anand Piramal in front of guests including Hillary Clinton, James Murdoch, Indian cricket player Sachin Tendulkar and many big-name Bollywood actors.
Videos emerged of the set, which was like an (only slightly) down-played version of what a ticket-holding audience member at a stadium show might get.
It prompted lots of discussion online, with many who are unfamiliar with the bride and groom asking who exactly gets the privilege of having the world's biggest pop star perform on their special day.
Two lovers, two very rich families
Ambani, 27, is the daughter of Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in India and the 19th richest in the world, according to Forbes, whose net worth is estimated at $44 billion.
He is the chairman of Reliance Industries, which began life as a small textile company started in the 1960s. It later moved into oil and gas, and then, in the 1990s, telecommunications.

In the 2000s it went into retail, selling everything from homewares to fruit and electronics in 1,300 stores across India. It now has 187,000 employees and brings in $60 billion a year.
Her fiance Anand, 33, is the son of Ajay Piramal (estimated net worth: $4 billion), who founded the Piramal Group, of which the younger man is now executive director.
That company also started in textiles before expanding into telecommunications and pharmaceuticals.
The two clans have been close for decades, and both the bride and the groom have gone into their respective family businesses after gaining degrees from Ivy League universities in the US.
Many in India, where millions live in dire poverty, have closely followed the preparations, including the couple's engagement at the luxury Villa D'Este hotel on Italy's Lake Como, attended by more than 600 guests and featuring a private performance by singer John Legend.
Now to Mumbai, and a billion-dollar home
The guest list for the wedding is expansive, reportedly forcing the event's organisers to book out nearby hotels and create an app mapping out the activities.
Security was beefed up as the high-profile guests started arriving at Udaipur's airport last week, said a source at the scene who asked not to be identified.

Outside, they were awaited by luxury sedans driven by chauffers wearing white uniforms and colourful Rajasthani turbans.
So far, guests have been entertained as part of the wedding sageet, a traditional set of events that take place before the official ceremony.
The formal nuptials will take place in Antilia, the compound-like Ambani family home in Mumbai.
The 400,000-square-foot building, in one of the world's most expensive neighbourhoods, has 27 floors and a carpark that can accommodate 168 vehicles.
Valued at more than $1 billion, it is considered the second-most expensive property in the world, after Buckingham Palace.

Spending a cool $139 million on a wedding might seem like something outside the realm of possibility for almost everyone — but when your dad is the wealthiest person in Asia, with a fortune of $60 billion, that bill is pocket change.
Isha Ambani, the daughter of Indian business magnate Mukesh Ambani, was married earlier this week in a days-long celebration that was attended by royals, celebrities and politicians.
The family also live in what’s known as the world’s most expensive home, rivalled only by Buckingham Palace in London — Queen Elizabeth II’s home sits on Crown land and hence the Ambanis hold the number one title.
The wedding, their Mumbai home and the toys that go with it are all supported and paid for by the family business, Reliance Industries.
The business was launched by Ambani’s father Dhirubhai Ambani and is the ultimate rags to riches story in India.
Starting as a humble materials business, the family later turned Reliance Industries into the world’s biggest producer of polyester fibres and yarns.
The conglomerate has since grown to become a Fortune 500 company worth more than $100 billion and responsible for a fifth of India’s exports.

The groom Anand Piramal is the son of industrialist Ajay Piramal, thought to be worth $US10 billion.
The wedding was held in Mumbai on Wednesday but festivities began weeks ago, starting in September with an engagement party at a lakeside Italian palace.
Over the weekend, thousands attended pre-wedding parties at a 16th century palace in the Indian desert city of Udaipur, where videos shot by partygoers showed Hillary Clinton dancing with Shah Rukh Khan, one of India’s biggest movie stars, as former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry danced just a few feet away.
A highlight was a performance by Beyonce, who sang Crazy In Love, among other hits, with a band backing her up and a series of costume changes that included at least one India-inspired outfit.

Indian weddings are famously elaborate, driving many families into debt with expectations that they invite hundreds or thousands of people, and arranging professional song-and-dance shows.
Among India’s rich, weddings are displays of almost unimaginable wealth, with guests flown in on chartered jets from around the world and celebrities paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for brief appearances.
In 2004, a daughter of Indian steel baron Lakshmi Mittal held her engagement party at Versailles.
The Indian media noted that the actual Ambani wedding, in Mumbai, was expected to be a relatively small affair, with just 600 or so people in attendance. More parties will follow the marriage ceremony.
The family is said to have reserved hundreds of hotel rooms for their guests.
Indian grooms traditionally ride to their weddings on horses, but Piramal arrived at the Ambani home in a classic Rolls Royce, with marching bands playing in the procession and scowling bodyguards scattered through the crowds.
Near the family home, Mumbai resident Kashyap Sompura said he was not bothered by the extravagance.
“People, even when they don’t have money, they take loans and do lavish weddings,” said Sompura, 50. For someone of Ambani’s wealth, “I don’t think there is anything wrong with him sparing money for that.”

Mukesh Ambani controls the conglomerate Reliance Industries, which has businesses ranging from petroleum to chemicals to mobile phones. The Piramal family businesses include pharmaceuticals and real estate.
Despite her exorbitant wedding, Ms Ambani is determined to give back to India.
In an interview with Vogue, the recent Yale graduate said she was aware of her “responsibility”.
“All my life, I’ve seen my family dedicate themselves to growing Reliance and improving quality of life for all Indians. I feel a sense of responsibility towards the company and my country. I truly believe that helping to grow Reliance is my dharma,” Isha told the magazine in July 2017.
“My best role model is my father. Because of him I believe fearlessness is a virtue. He raised me to believe I could achieve anything if I am courageous, hardworking and self-confident. He taught me there is no glass ceiling. His patriotism to India and his passion for the potential of the youth of this country is truly inspiring.”
‘I’M RICH AND I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU THINK’ — THE OPULENCE OF THE AMBANIS
Before the wedding of the century, the Ambanis were best known for the home they live in.
Stretching 27 storeys, Antilia became the world’s first apartment to cost more than a billion dollars when it was finished in 2010.
Six years after Ambani lost his father to a stroke, the billionaire businessman dipped into his fortune and started construction on Antilia in the heart of Mumbai, on one of the world’s priciest streets.
Ambani, his wife Nita and their three children Anant, Akash and Isha have lived in the home since 2010, two years after construction started.
The sprawling, glass-covered building stretches more than 150 metres into the Mumbai sky, towering over the city’s 20 million residents and well above the smog the city is known for.
In 2012, Nita invited Vanity Fair into the home, showing off Antilia’s lush, multi-level gardens, stunning water features and their three helipads perched on the roof.
The 27 storeys, most of which have extended ceilings, also feature a 50-seat theatre, nine elevators stretching up from the lobby and a grand ballroom for entertaining guests.
Swimming pools hover over the edge of the apartment and the parking garage stretches six levels to fit 160 cars.
It’s all maintained and kept clean by over 600 staff, 24 hours a day, but when the kids come home from studying across the world, they’re still made to clean their own rooms.
“It’s a modern home with an Indian heart,” Nita told Vanity Fair.
“We made our home right at the top because we wanted the sunlight … so it’s an elevated house on top of a garden.”

Nita told the magazine the apartment had been modelled on the lotus and the sun and decorated with rare wood, marble and mother-of pearl.
Its controversial design, exorbitant price tag and only being home to one family of five earnt Antilia an infamous reputation around the world, well before it was finished.
“This is a gated community in the sky,” author Gyan Prakash told the New York Times in 2010.
“It is in a way reflective of how the rich are turning their faces away from the city.”
Author Hamish McDonald, who chronicled the Ambani family history in a 2010 book, said the over-the-top apartment was for the businessman to show India he had finally made it.
“It’s kind of returning with a vengeance to where they made it into the middle class and trumping everybody,” Mr McDonald told the New York Times.
“He’s sort of saying, ‘I’m rich and I don’t care what you think.’”
But the Ambani family don’t just live in luxury in Mumbai.
When Ambani needs to leave his beloved home in India, he jumps on the family’s private Airbus and flies to wherever he has to go.
Ambani bought the Airbus as a birthday gift for his wife in 2007 for $60 million, a year before he forked out more than a billion for Antilia.
After the plane purchase, Ambani paid to have the 180-passenger aircraft refitted.
Now, its custom design includes a living room, bedroom, satellite TV, a sky bar and a spa.
Ambani also owns the cricket team Mumbai Indians, a franchise from the Indian Premier League.
