The dirtiest move in the history of MMA? Aoki breaks opponent's arm and then flips him off

By Steve Cofield

Shinya Aoki may have cemented his reputation as the most vicious fighter in mixed martial during his fight last night in Japan. The Japanese phenom, who looks more like a nerdy schoolboy than a trained killer, developed a real nasty streak in the second half of 2009. Aoki, 26, made it a point to rant about a lack of respect the United States' top promotion, the UFC, after his last few wins.

Last night, he did a lot more than talk trash. You think Brock Lesnar's behavior at UFC 100 was crazy? Aoki blew away the UFC heavyweight champ. The only thing missing was smashing Mizuto Hirota with a steel chair.

Watch the video (2:19 mark) but only if your stomach is strong.

Aoki, one of the best submission fighters in the world, got Hirota twisted up with his arm behind his back. Hiroto wouldn't submit via tap and Aoki broke his arm. It happens. But when Aoki stood up and gave the seriously injured loser the finger, he may have moved to the top of the list for bad sportsmanship in all of sports. A top moment of the decade on the final day, wow!

There was plenty of heat going into this fight. Aoki, 23, has been lauded as one the most dangerous submission artists in the world. Hirota mocked Aoki's jiu-jitsu. Apparently it's pretty good and Aoki took real offense to Hirota's trash talking.

Why is he allowed to do such things? What kind of boxing is this?

it's MMA.

there's also the UFC, Pride, K1, etc...

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.

The roots of mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. Modern MMA competition emerged in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, although professional MMA events had been held in Japan by Shooto starting back in 1989. Originally organized with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors were pitted against one another with minimal rules for safety.[1] Later promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport.[2] The name mixed martial arts was coined by one of the developers of these rules, Jeff Blatnick, a former Greco-Roman wrestler and Olympic gold medalist.[3] Following these changes, the sport has seen increased popularity with pay per view reach rivaling boxing and professional wrestling.[4]
