Days of torrential rain in southern China have triggered severe landslides and flooding across the region. State media reports that 18 people are dead and over a dozen missing.
Rescuers in the Guangxi region have pulled 10 people from the debris, although at least 16 remain trapped. Heavy rain storms and a landslide in another part of the region have also claimed eight lives.
In Laibin, in the Guangxi region, rising waters engulfed some 65 schools in the city Tuesday, leaving students and teachers stranded until rescue efforts began.
Wei Yanting, a student at a boarding school, said water rushed into her dormitory at around 3:00am Wednesday morning. “We all climbed onto the top bunk beds and sat there watching the water cover the lower ones,” she said.
The summer rainstorms leave a trail of destruction across southern China each year. Since Monday they have so far affected 1.2 million people and caused almost 600 million yuan of damage. Over 57,000 people have been evacuated from the worst-hit areas.
