He reportedly became highly agitated after taking his medication

A 55-year-old man in Guangxi, China, was hospitalised for a persistent cough and was initially diagnosed with a non-severe case of pneumonia.

However, his condition deteriorated rapidly the following day, and he passed away after a sudden manic episode.

Had been coughing for an extended period of time​

Citing a report by Chinese media outlet Cover News, 8world reported that the man, An Fusheng (transliterated pseudonym), had been coughing for an extended period of time with no signs of improvement.

On the afternoon of Dec. 10, his wife decided to accompany him to a hospital in Guigang, Guangxi, for medical treatment.

Doctors diagnosed him with a mild case of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and admitted him for observation and treatment.

Medical staff reportedly informed the family that he had a mild lung infection and that his sodium and potassium levels were also low.

However, his condition took a turn for the worse the next day.

Sudden manic episode​

According to 8world, on Dec. 11, An's daughter received a call from her mother saying that her father's "condition didn't seem quite right", and she immediately rushed to the hospital.

At about 6:30 pm that day, An reportedly became highly agitated after taking his medication.

He apparently paced around the ward and shouted. He also claimed his medication was poisonous and refused to take it.

Due to the disturbance caused by his behaviour, the hospital reportedly suggested transferring An to another medical facility that evening.

The hospital also contacted a mental health centre in Guigang and called the police.

When police officers arrived, An's family members were asked to leave temporarily to avoid further agitating him, and An was subsequently placed alone in a room.

Stopped breathing​

At around 10 pm that night, when the family was allowed to see him again, they found medical staff attempting to resuscitate him.

They were later informed that he had stopped breathing and suffered cardiac arrest.

Despite more than an hour of resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Dec. 12.

Symptoms of "hysteria and restlessness"​

The hospital's medical records reportedly state that An developed symptoms of "hysteria and restlessness" at 6:31 pm on Dec. 11, and that he pulled out his IV catheter himself, 8world reported.

During the episode, he also got into arguments with the family members of other patients, prompting the hospital to call the police.

At 10:20 pm, he was still described as being in a manic state.

After further discussion with An's family, the hospital recommended transferring him to a higher-level medical facility for further treatment.

However, before the transfer could be completed, his condition suddenly worsened at around 11:20 pm, and he passed away at 12:50 am despite resuscitation efforts.

The family has since raised numerous questions regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.

An's children reportedly communicated with the hospital multiple times, but the daughter described the hospital’s response as indifferent and said they were advised to pursue judicial appraisal and legal avenues.

With assistance from the police, the Guigang Municipal Health Commission has dispatched personnel to investigate the case.

An autopsy commissioned by the family has also been completed, although the results have yet to be released.

The Guigang Municipal Health Commission confirmed on Dec. 16 that it has received the case and that investigations are ongoing.
