Yi Liu Xiang Block 105 Hougang Avenue 1 Lorong Ah Soo Food Centre, #02-30

Fried kuning fish is the star of the show at this 28-year-old stall: it’s fresh and well-seasoned.
In addition, it serves an array of hotdogs, fish fillets, fishcakes and fried beancurd. You’ll find the accompanying omelette fluffy and the rice rich with the aroma of coconut milk.

Opens: 6.30am-12pm. Closed on Mondays and Thursdays.
Price: $2.30

Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak 2 Adam Road Adam Road Food Centre, Stall 2

There is a perpetual queue here. And once you’re in it, you can’t help but pick up the whiff of fresh coconut rice – the hallmark of this family-run, 13-year-old stall.

We ordered the “full house” set, which comes with an otah, fried chicken wing, fried egg and ikan bilis.
The sambal is cooked over a small flame for five to six hours.

Opens: 7am to 6pm daily. Closed on Fridays.
Price: $3.50-$4.50

Hup Lee Nasi Lemak Block 209, Hougang Street 21 Kovan Hougang Market and Food Centre, #01-27

This eight-year-old stall sells nasi lemak Chinese-style.

This means, apart from your basic fluffy coconut rice, there’s a dizzying array of dishes, including Chinese sausages, ngoh hiang and fish cakes.

Choose also from three different veggies – sambal french beans, ladies fingers and Chinese cabbage.

You’ll love the chicken wings, which are crispy and succulent.

Opens: 6am-9.30pm daily.

Price: $2

Mizzy’s Corner 2 Changi Village Road Changi Village Food Centre, #01-55

All ingredients of the nasi lemak are cooked impeccably.

The ikan bilis – we like the robust taste of the anchovies – are crispy too. The chicken wings are juicy and the sambal is flavourful and sweet.

Opens: 7am-midnight daily.

Price: $3

Teo’s Noodle 207 New Upper Changi Road (Food Centre), #01-02

This stall isn’t for those who object to grease – but if you’re willing to ignore the glistening sheen on the items at this stall, you’ll find the chicken wing tasty and tender, and the fried egg salted just right.

The sambal here is wickedly numbing and the rice has a light pandan taste.

Opens: 2.30pm to 8pm daily.

Price: $2.50

Bibi Kitchen Block 262 Serangoon Central Drive, #01-115

This is a goldmine of fried food accompaniments for the nasi lemak: You’ll get chicken nuggets, fried beancurd and fish and sotong balls on a stick.

A few tables are set up outside this outlet, for you to take your pick and eat on site.

The rice is fragrant and the yolk in the sunny side-up egg cooked to just the right gooey texture.

Opens: 24 hours.

Price: $2-$2.20

Sri Sujana 2 Changi Village Road Changi Village Food Centre, #01-54

The sambal at this stall is unlike any other – full of spiciness, with a smoky flavour. It’s done fresh every day, taking four hours to make.

It mixes marvellously with the clean-tasting, lightly flavoured rice. No wonder there are always orders from the nearby Selarang and Hendon camps.

Opens: 7am-2am daily. Closed on Mondays.

Price: $3-$3.50

Lee Brothers Otah Block 209, Hougang Street 21 Kovan Hougang Market and Food Centre, #01-02

This is an otah stall which also sells a mean nasi lemak.

Get the nasi lemak in a paper box, which includes a slice of fish otah or wrapped in a banana leaf, which includes a fried kuning fish instead of the otah.

The rice has a fresh taste and the otah is smooth and tasty.

Opens: 7am-9pm daily.

Price: $1.60 per leaf-wrapped packet with the fish or $1.70 per box with the otah.
