SINGAPORE - President Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife Mary will be in Portugal from May 4 to 6 for a state visit, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement today.

President Tan will meet his Portugese counterpart Cavaco Silva, as well as Portugal's prime pinister Pedro Passos Coelho and President of the Assembly of the Republic Maria da Assuncao Esteves.

He will then make an official visit to Switzerland on May 6, where he will meet President and Federal Councillor for Foreign Affairs Didier Burkhalter.

During the five-day visit, President Tan will deliver a speech to the St Gallen Symposium Circle of Benefactors and attend a seminar organised by Institute of Policy Studies and Avenir Suisse.

He will also visit the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Nestle Research Centre and Olympic Museum.

Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Trade and Industry S Iswaran, Minister of State for National Development and Minister of State for Defence Dr Mohamad Maliki bin Osman, East Coast GRC MP Jessica Tan and Nee Soon GRC MP Patrick Tay will be accompanying President Tan during the two visits.

J Y Pillay, chairman of the Council of Presidential Advisers, will exercise the functions of the Office of the President from May 4 to 10.

Come June to Oct this year, you will probably see some Ministers going for at least 2 weeks of official duty where the norm is a week or less.
 
Wah! So many first class Presidential freebie trips to Europe with one big State visit to the UK in October to meet the Queen.
UK State visits by foreign dignitaries are generally grand affairs so you can be sure the MSM will be milking this event for all its worth come October time.
