Tony Tan’s son served NS as a ’scientist’ and NOT as a combat-fit MO

While most Singaporean doctors have to serve their National Service as SAF medical officers (MOs) and not in their chosen fields, a few have the privilege of going through ’special service pathways’ which are almost unheard of to outsiders.

According to a tip-off we received, Dr Patrick Tan Boon Ooi, the son of PAP-endorsed presidential candidate Dr Tony Tan served his National Service as a desk-bound ‘defense medical scientist’ in an office rather than a SAF MO out in the field.

A President scholar, Dr Patrick Tan disrupted from the army to study in Harvard University in 1988. He then disrupted again to enrol in Stanford University to study medicine from 1992 to 2000.

Upon his return in 2000, he did not complete the rest of his National Service as a SAF MO like all Singaporean doctors, but as a ‘defense research scientist’ at the Defence Medical and Environmental Research Institute (DMERI, then called DMRI), a post he continued to hold till 2004, two years after his ORD. Read his CV below:
http://www.gis.a-star.edu.sg/interne...ta/37_pubs.pdf

In a clarification posted on his Facebook, the Office of Dr Tony Tan revealed that Dr Patrick Tan had fulfilled his IPPT requirements:

“Throughout his National Service, he received an NSman’s salary and fulfilled all requirements of NS such as IPPT and in-camp training. Today, Dr Tan’s son is still a practicing researcher in genomics, specializing in both cancer and infectious disease.”
Since Dr Patrick Tan is COMBAT-FIT, why didn’t he attend the Medical Officer Cadet Course (MOCC) and serve in a combat vocation like all other doctors?

Dr Tony Tan was the Defence Minister from 1995 to 2003. Who made the decision to send Dr Patrick Tan to work in DMRI instead of going through MOCC?

What are the criteria for doctors to serve as defense scientists? Are there other doctors who went through the same ’service pathway’ as Dr Patrick Tan too?

Can Singapore doctors who are planning to become Family Physicians serve their NS in polyclinics too instead of wasting their precious two years learning and doing irrelevant stuff like boarding NSFs and doing FFIs for NSmen?

During the recent General Election, PAP candidate (now MP) from Malaysia Dr Janil Puthucheary humiliated Singapore men and demeaned NS by boasting publicly that he also served ‘10 years of NS by saving kids’ lives’.

It is even more depressing to learn now that the son of a PAP Defence Minister might have done a ‘Puthucheary’ ten years earlier.

Dr Tony Tan should come clean with Singaporeans and explained whether Dr Patrick Tan was accorded preferential treatment to serve his NS as a defence medical scientist. To put it bluntly, if Dr Patrick Tan is not the son of Dr Tony Tan, will he still be posted to the same vocation?

Just wondering what in camp training does a researcher do ?
Why harp on IPPT so many times as though its a big deal. My kid also went through the same IPPT since school days.
If this Puthucheary guy is sincere, he should volunteer to serve NS as a medical Officer instead of talking nonsense.

People don't realise that NS is for peasants only and not for the elites. If you are a son of an elite, no matter how fit you are, how many sports you play, you will be automatically downgraded from PES A to PES B or less. This allows the elites to go home after working office hours and get free weekends off, in order to study for their SAT exams or help run the family business. After ROD, they are never called up for Reservist. The White Horse system is very real in the SAF. But what people don't understand is that even for white horses, there are different grades. For Patrick Tan, he is a super white horse. If he wakes up in the morning with a sore throat, he is excuse from all activities for the whole day and send to see MO. Other lesser grade white horses could be sons of wealthy buinessmen, or sons of senior govt. officials (superscale level), they are given the benefit of doubt if they report sick, rather than be viewed as a skivver by the MO for the regular NSmen. Therefore, its true that Patrick Tan did at best what can be described as a half ass NS. While everyone had to put their education and career path on hold while doing NS, he actually furthered his by being attached to a unit that he could use his training on and add to his resume. How many NSmen can say that?

I believe that this should be an election issue for the upcoming PE. How can the independence and integrity of the office of president be served by TT who abused his power to better his son?

You expect these fellas to protect the country ? They have the money to bail out anytime when there's a threat coming our way. We are the ones that are being stuck with all our money in CPF !

"White Than White Itself" ? More like desperate white washing or laundering to me.

One law for ornery peasants, and one law for PAP elites and their families! LOL..

Now we know why we don't need multi-party democracy. Irritating peasants always disputing unalterable facts of life.

Ministers' sons, no matter how lacking they are in leadership qualities, get to go to OCS. Anyone know of a minister's son who served NS as an other rank?

We repeat the following questions to Dr Patrick Tan, Dr Tony Tan and MINDEF:

1. When Dr Patrick Tan completed his studies at Harvard University in 1992, he should have returned to Singapore to serve his NS like other scholarship holders. Why was he allowed to disrupt a second time?

2. Are there any other scholars or Singaporeans who disrupted for such a lengthy period of time?

3. Since Dr Patrick Tan was combat-fit then, why didn’t he go through the Medical Officer Cadet Course (MOCC) to serve his NS as a SAF medical officer (MO) of which age should not be a problem since there are doctors more than 40 years of age who are specialists attending the course in the past.

4. Are there any other combat-fit NSFs who served their NS in DMERI like Dr Patrick Tan?

5. Where did Dr Patrick Tan do his in-camp training?

The crux of the matter is NEVER about Dr Patrick Tan not serving NS, getting NS allowances during his NS stint or ‘hurting’ Dr Tony Tan, but about fairness, accountability and transparency.

Dr Tony Tan should stop obfuscating the issue and come clean with Singaporeans unless he has some serious problem with his English comprehension skills.

TT said " I have never intervened in their[his sons] postings".
That make him no less culpable-as he sat by and did nothing while his son(or sons) received what appeared to most people as special treatment.
As Defence Minister he should have stepped in and make sure his son gets the same treatment as eveyone's else.
That is the "real issue(s) at hand".

He claimed there were "false rumours" ,but did not point out specifically what they are.
As his good friend friend LKY said " If you do not sue , than it must be true".

I am waiting eagerly for TT and his son to sue the pants out of those people who circulate rumours about his family and protect its " values of responsibility and integrity " in the world class Courts of Singapore.

At the end of the day, 'the CHOSEN ONE from the 'thunder god' will be CHOSEN. Why, then, we go about pulling all these out of the bag, it is futile & waste of time. Going to elect for a president, is also another waste of time, we need to change the system, not vote for the same system again & again. :p

I am willing to accept TT explanation after he or Mindef answer the questions

1. The disruptions give to NS to study Medicine, is for MBBS or MBBS-PHD? How many were approved MBBS-PHD and how many were not approved MBBS-PHD dirsuption from 1980-2010?

2. How many people get 12 year NS disruption?

3. How many people get scientist posting under NS? Who and when was the first scientist NS posting? Criteria for this NS posting?

TT is telling us he did not have any instructions passed down to favour his sons, recorded in black and white.

And you are right. By not doing anything when favour was done, it is as good as TT directing MINDEF to 'favour' his kids. TT is not fit to be president. TKL is more credible than TT.

The blatant hypocrisy of Tony Tan...

His son serving his remaining two years in a non-uniformed role as researcher in DMERI does not qualify as NS.

One of the criteria of disruption for an NSF seeking disruption is that he must show potential to be an officer. To this end, the disrupted personel will return and is expected to complete OCS from where he last stopped his training before his disruption from NS.

It begs the question as to why Patrick Tan did not complete the remaining 6 months of his OCS training. This is since the potential to be an officer is one prerequisite for disruption. And with that, the expectation is that you should continue with OCS training after returning from studies and not merely sail into a non-uniformed and physically non-onerous job.

Tony Tan owes a reponsibility to all past, present and future National Servicemen and their parents to show how his son's treatment is, in his own words used 15 years ago in Perth, "fair" and "equitable".

"KNOW WHAT NS REQUIREMENTS ARE BEFORE MIGRATING".
147th Prostitute Press
21 October 1996

IF YOU plan to emigrate from Singapore, please familiarise yourself with the national-service requirements of your sons.

Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan made this appeal in response to a question from the floor during a dinner hosted by the Temasek Club here on Saturday.

A member of the 200-strong club, which is made up of Singaporeans and former citizens who live here, asked about national service for Singaporean boys who have emigrated here with their families.

The minister said he appreciated their concerns, but "national service is, we believe, fundamental to Singapore's survival".

If the boys left the country before they reached 11 years of age, they could renounce their citizenship when they turned 21 and could visit Singapore as a foreigner.

If they left after the age of 11, they would have to return to Singapore later for national service of between two and 2-1/2 years.

Dr Tan said: "We take the view that they have enjoyed some of the benefits of living in Singapore, and so have to fulfil their NS responsibilities before they can renounce their citizenship."

He added: "Singapore does not recognise the system of dual citizenship.

"Children who take up Australian citizenship are considered to be still Singaporean citizens and have to fulfill their NS responsibilities."

That is a principle which is difficult for the Defence Ministry to compromise, and the ministry is standing firm on that, he stressed.

"In fact, we have received representations from various government ministries of our own to say that, because of our strictness in applying this policy, we are denying re-entry into Singapore of many talented Singaporeans who can benefit our country," he disclosed.

The rationale, however, is: "The only way we can operate our NS system and have the support of Singaporeans is when everybody feels that our system, unlike those in some other countries, is fair, is applied equitably and no one liable for NS is allowed not to serve."

To another question relating to business opportunities, Dr Tan said that the expertise of many Australian companies could be supported by the capital and range of contacts of Singapore enterprises.

That would make for successful joint ventures in the booming economies of South-east Asia and East Asia.

A Temasek Club member asked for a Singapore consular office to be opened in Perth to help the thousands of Singaporeans who live here with passport matters and business links.

Dr Tan replied that the prospects were good given the growing investments of Singapore companies in Perth and Western Australia.

Dr Tan arrived in Perth on Friday for a seven-day introductory visit to Australia as Singapore's Defence Minister.

He and his delegation left here yesterday for Canberra where today they will call on Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Defence Minister Ian McLachlan.
