SENIOR diplomat Tommy Koh on Tuesday waded into a debate on minimum wage and argued in favour of such a wage as it will improve the lot of Singaporeans in low-paying jobs.

'The growing disparity and the hardship faced by the lowest 20 per cent of our workers is a threat to our social cohesion and inconsistent with our policy of inclusive growth,' he said at a book launch.

'As a Straits Times correspondent has recently commented, Singapore is a First World country with a Third World wage structure.'

Prof Koh, special adviser to the Institute of Policy Studies, was referring to an Insight feature in May on how wages of low-income workers in Singapore had not advanced.

He made his case in a speech at the launch of a book of essays on Singapore's success story and its challenges, Management of Success: Singapore Revisited.

His remarks come in the wake of a debate between two National University of Singapore economists.

Well it doesn't matter if he's running for presidency or he's decided to stay at home.

He's made very pointed and significant comments, especially in the wake of so much public discontent against the deluge of FTs and the reality of them stealing jobs from local boys.

When you think about the issue of Sinkieland not having a minimum wage structure, you would soon realise the FTs are probably the only ones who have truly benefitted from the past ten years of social engineering. People who come to a first world to seek a better life and future do not have to contend with the fact that they have to operate in a system with a suppressed wage structure. The pittance they get back home will in any case, be multiplied exponentially even in a system that lacks protection for the lowest income earner. FTs are thus relatively unscathed, and that's why they love Sinkieland.

You may have missed the point. Would you suggest that we should have one minimum wage for citizens and another one for FTs?

No Sporean will want to get, for example, the pay of a domestic worker. Sporeans would want a minimum wage of $1500 - (conservatively about $5 a day, a schoolboy's daily allowance) - in order to survive with the present cost of living. Can we afford to pay the Bangladeshi GD worker or Indon domestic help that amount? We may not even want anybody to sell you food at the hawker centre, or deliver your newspaper. Stop FTs from coming to Singapore? We will have a great social upheaval. I prefer let the gahment make the big decision.

As for Prof Tommy Koh as President? Humble, respectable, diplomatic and knowledgeable. He will make a great President for Singapore.

he is obviously a math moron. $5 a day equates to $150 a month for a 30-day work month or $100 a month for a 20-day work month.

$5 an hour equates to $1200 a month for an 8-hour day 30-day work month or $800 a month for an 8-hour day 20-day work month. even at $5 an hour, he is still a math moron. a math moron is always a math moron no matter what the rate is.

This is one way to make employers engage local with minimum wage. No employer will employ a bangladeshi with minimum wage plus levy. The government will not implement minimum wage becasue of levy. They prefer locals to be unemployed and dish out workfare than not collecting levies from FT

They can't add 1 + 1 to get 3, they can explain the venn diagram
