Singapore faces shortage of bus drivers: PTC

ST Feb 2, 2012
Singapore faces a shortage of bus drivers, the Public Transport Council (PTC) said on Wednesday.

Unless transport operators can attract more recruits, they may not be able to put enough buses on the roads, said PTC chairman Gerard Ee. 'Finding enough bus captains is a challenge,' he added.

About 30 per cent of the 1,900 bus drivers employed by SMRT are from Malaysia or China. 'As Singaporeans are becoming better qualified with higher career aspirations, it has become increasingly difficult to attract them to become service leaders,' said an SMRT spokesman.

ho ho ho... more busses to horlan lo :D

When you offer shit wages and unholy working hours, do not be surprised that few people take the job.

more, more, more, can now use ITE to train the Burmese to drive the buses...more, more, more...

If you can offer $3k per month for bus driver, of course there will be local takers. how can you raise the property and rent price with an ever increasing inflation and still pay low wages. That doesn't sound right. even cleaners or road sweeper, their minimum wage should be 2k. FT has lower requirements because they can get their land and houses back home at a much cheaper prices.

i do not mind to drive a bus if you pay me 3k to 4k per month for it. that is first world wages right, should be in a first world country, right?

The problem with those running the bus companies are government people who are still holding those old age perception of looking at these jobs like cleaners and bus drivers.

These jobs are looked down upon and be deem to get lousy wages to fit the so called status image. That is so wrong and backward.

Maybe their brains should be operated on and check what went wrong through the years.

It does gives me the impression that the ones who are running the bus company are totally incompetent. Good luck Singapore.. that is just so lousy.

More price increases, approved by PTC to enable the bus monopolist to train & employ better bus KAPITAN to serve you better.:D

if the bus company want to be truly private, then dun put in the government people to run it. What they are doing is not for the country but for their own profits and shareholders profit. Then get real businessmen to do it.

If you want to put in government people to run it, then make it like to help the country, not shareholders' pocket.

Putting in government people to run a so called private company is called corruption.

Based on what i see.. the bus companies should not be run as a private company at all. it should be govt run and for the people, not for profit. Where in the world bus company earn profit. Public transport is for the public and is not for profits.

You may argue if no profit how to keep it running? Taxpayer money lah.. then what.. pay tax for what.. to fatten the govt people stomach??? That is outright corruption.. that is so sickening.

This bus company boss very steady la

Aussie bus boss gives $20 million bonus to staff

MELBOURNE (AFP) - An Australian bus operator has stunned his employees by handing out A$15 million (S$20 million) in thank you bonuses, with workers saying on Wednesday they were overwhelmed by his generosity.

Ken Grenda, 79, sold his family-run company after 66 years and decided to put a chunk of the profits into the pockets of his employees for their hard work and loyalty.

Many of his 1,800 workers thought their banks had made an error when they discovered thousands of dollars in their accounts, the Herald Sun reported.

They received an average $8,500 (S$10,700) although some got bonuses as high as $100,000.

Top management knows only to collect high wages for themselves and any operations improvement it will always be betterest, fasterest and cheaperest workers.
