Are our youth becoming a 'jackass' nation'?
By Elysa Chen and Bryna Sim

July 30, 2010

IS THE easy use of video phones making some young people come up with cruel pranks like the MTV show Jackass?

That seems to be the case, going by two videos posted this month - one on bilingual news and interactive web portal omy.sg and another on citizen journalism website Stomp.

The 25-second video on omy.sg shows a male student being dangled over a parapet by his schoolmates. At one point, only one of his limbs is being held by his schoolmates.

The video on Stomp, posted on July 9, shows one student hitting his classmate viciously with a broom at least six times.

Psychologist Daniel Koh has noticed this worrying trend of silly, dangerous pranks among young people.

"Teenagers are trying to get themselves seen online. Armed with their technological gadgets, it's so easy to do so. They get so caught up with this that they don't care about their safety sometimes," said Mr Koh, 38, from Insights Mind Centre. "They are really playing it up for the camera. It's thoughtless, sad, and cruel."

Ms Vanessa von Auer, clinic director and psychologist at the VA Psychology Centre, felt that the video depicted a scene of peer pressure.

"The boy (who was dangled over the parapet) did seem to show hesitation and understanding of the dangers involved. As I watched it, all the terrible things that could have happened to this boy and others around him flashed before my eyes," she said.

14-year-old girl’s shocking attack on teacher
By Angela Lim – July 30th, 2010

An English language teacher at a local secondary school has lodged a police report after her 14-year-old student allegedly kicked her in the abdomen and slapped her on the head.

The 45-year-old teacher, from a school in the south, had tried to stop the teenager from disrupting her lesson on Monday when she claimed she was assaulted.

According to The Straits Times, the student in question has a history of behavioural problems and was already being counselled by the school.

The alleged attack on the teacher took place in front of an entire class after the teacher told the teen to stop knocking a library book against her desk. When she refused to stop, the teacher tried to confiscate her book.

But it was not until the teacher started recording the girl’s behaviour in a notebook that the student was said to have lost it completely.

She allegedly began screaming vulgarities and stomped on the teacher’s right foot before rushing out of the classroom. She then went on to attack another school staff member in the staff room before returning to the classroom.

After that, she reportedly attacked the teacher again, kicking her twice in the abdomen and hitting her on the head.

The school principal merely confirmed that the student had become agitated and hit the teacher who tried to counsel her on her “uncooperative behaviour in class”.

“Our school staff intervened immediately and the student calmed down after that. The teacher did not sustain any injury,” he added.

Despite the principal’s claims, the teacher’s husband was upset enough to insist his wife go for a medical examination, and accompanied her to a police station to file a report.

“My wife was in shock, this was her first run-in with the girl,” the husband said. “I am worried for her safety.”

The petite teen student is apparently not new to trouble. She was reportedly caught with a penknife in school, was often rude to teachers and ran away from home in March. In addition, it is believed that she is also involved in another police case in which she allegedly instigated three boys to beat up another student.

The school is well aware of the student’s problems and had been working with her and her mother to address the issues, according to the principal.

The principal added, “She has been given time off from school to reflect on her actions and assigned schoolwork to be completed at home. We will continue to counsel the student and review her progress.”

Counsellors are increasingly concerned about teens losing their cool and turning violent.

In May this year, netizens were outraged when a video of a teenage boy assaulting his schoolmate in the lift made its rounds on the Internet.

Executive director of Singapore Children’s Society, Mr Alfred Tan, said he is seeing more cases of children resorting to violence toward teachers and caregivers when they have difficulty controlling their anger.

“This may be because they are exposed to violent movies and videos, and they copy the actions, and also because parents are less strict in disciplining their kids these days,” he said.

Chief executive of Ain Society, Mr Yusof Ismail also suggested that parents be more willing to seek help when they have trouble controlling their children.

He said most parents do not file for a Beyond Parental Control order, which is a formal request for the court’s intervention when counselling does not work.

“They are embarrassed and also afraid their children will have a bad record,” he explained. “But this doesn’t help the children and one day, they will snap if they do not learn how to manage their anger.”

The youths and children of today are becoming more and more atrocious in their behaviour.
The main reason for this is poor parenting.
The parents of today are too busy making money, trying to making a living and put food on the table and pay off their mortgages, going to the casinos, buying lottery, gossiping about others, sucking up to the elites, complaining to the elites, complaining about the elites, even scamming others. They have little or no time to discipline and control their children, let alone teach them proper values and codes of conduct.

This will have an extremely adverse impact on society and the future of SG.
What can be done to improve this situation?

Hahahahhahahahahahaahhaa power girl!! A questioner of norms, authority and even language at such a young age, tsk. Cute!!!

If it were in Japan she'd graduate to a crappy high school and join one of the bosozoku female bike gangs in no time.

This girl has done a great job to teach the MOE instructors a good lesson

The cheebye teacher should be lucky to keep her job for offending her customers!

Introduce more condoms.

And legislate caning of those irresponsible and useless mothers and fathers.

If you can't discipline your kids, we'd discipline you. Have a nice day. :D

And not her beauty? Ah. We actually misread the word. Thanks those Mrs Singapore threads. Damn.

Very naughty and scheming. Very like Nanase Aikawa. She'd calm down when she reaches 30 probably.

No, this may be because of poor parenting. Don't shift to responsibility to other things.

Yeah again, poor parenting. Banning Street Fighter and Counterstrike won't work. Those old ugly social trash and young ugly nerd garbage would be lonelier and sadder than ever, and Indian foreigners would also protest, and not want to come here anymore, resulting in lost tourist revenue and a more imperiled local economy.

Blame the egg that beget the fowl....for it was genetically modified & the job was badly done, this we have to blame the Education Minister from the 1980's...

Bad education produces bad adults that produces bad children...and it goes on...

so blame the people who genetically modified the eggs... ha ha ha

They not afraid of PAP?
Don't know about the children but their parents are.
They act all aggressive when dealing with teachers or people telling off their children, but when the ministars and mps walk by, they smile and bow.
