In order for democracy to work, the basic notion of honesty and fair play has to permeate society first. It didn't happen overnight even in the West.

The Chinese aren't ready for it yet. Their psyche needs to undergo further development. It may happen in the future but it hasn't happened yet.

I'll give you a glaring example. Many golf courses in NZ used to have honesty boxes as the club houses were not manned during the week. You put your green fees into a slot and proceed to play your round.

This system was abandoned in the early 2000s with the mass arrival of Chinese immigrants. They arrived at the golf course in their Mercs but they played without paying and laughed at the stupid Kiwis for ever coming up with such a ridiculous system of payment.

Honesty and FairPlay in the west? Ever heard of opium war, mass murder of red Indians in USA etc? How about Iraq war by baby bush? Or forced adoption of aboriginals kids in oz?

China was thoroughly fucked by Mao, but you can't generalize the entire society. There are outrage over gross injustice in the china over perceived lack of values, and this alone shows that there is still a strong sense of FairPlay and honesty in the country, as otherwise people will not even feel outraged.

so am i right to say that, if the population want real Democracy, the people need to unsinkified themselves first. And the first thing they need to do is to have balls first, that is the baptism of being unsinkified.

Hello boss, honesty and democracy are two different things. The Chinese once they have tasted true democracy, will be no different from the angmos.

But I must admit the Chinese can be a selfish lot. Due to their education, culture, upbringing, etc... and fascist society they lived in. These contributed to their stagnation. But wait till democracy hits them, they will be as demo-crazy just the same!

democracy dun come to them just like that.

They need to have the right behaviour and character to earn the democracy.

You conveniently ignore the fact that the PAP has to govern a nation that is 75% ethnic Chinese. It has no choice but to be autocratic.

You can't simply transplant the system and methods of the Nordic states to Singapore as they are designed with a Caucasian electorate in mind.

how many more decades of education would it take to reshape the thinking of the 75% ethnic chinese into being more like the "caucasian electorate?" and would the electorate be any better or worse if it were 75% ethnic malay?

its been almost 50 years on, and still the establishment does not trust its own people. you can't expect to win our trust if you don't trust us to begin with.

the recent events in stockholm vividly demonstrate what will happen if more immigrants are parachuted into singapore who have no grasp whatsoever of the Singaporean concept of fair play. NRIs come to mind straight away.

In order for democracy to work, tribalism has to be eliminated and there must also be a universal acceptance that the state is secular.

In countries where democracy functions reasonably well, these prerequisites have been accepted by society at large.

In a functioning democracy, a minister can still have a beer with the leader of the opposition after being at each others throats for the best part of the day. The agree to disagree on policy but it does not mean that they cannot engage in social interaction beyond the halls of Parliament.

The reason why democracy is a lame duck in much of Africa and the Middle East is because tribalism and/or religious divisions still run deep. The opposition is the enemy which needs to be exterminated one way or another. The concept of "I disagree with what you say but I defend your right to say it" is totally alien to many societies. Unfortunately, many in this forum don't subscribe to this concept either. The number of nicks that I had to rescue from the "banned" list on a daily basis bears testimony to this fact.

The ethnic Chinese nations have a better understanding of democracy but there is still some way to go. LKY does not believe in democracy. JBJ was a sworn enemy to be crushed and eliminated.
