The container ship Istanbul Bridge departed from Ningbo-Zhoushan to Felixstowe on 22 September. The vessel’s departure marked the start of China-Europe Arctic Express Route as the world's first container shipping route via the Arctic.

The route is specifically designed for cross-border e-commerce and high-value-added goods, representing a significant achievement under the Belt and Road Initiative in advancing the "Polar Silk Road."

The 2000-built, Liberian-flagged ship is owned by Neom Holding, in the British Virgin Islands.

The China-Europe Arctic Express, utilising the Northern Sea Route (NSR) to reach Europe directly, has set a new record for transit time between China and Europe. The one-way journey from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port to Felixstowe Port takes only 18 days.

The Arctic voyage would knock eight days off the previous record set at the end of 2024, when the China-Europe Express service from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port to Wilhelmshaven Port in Germany took 26 days.

Compared with traditional routes, this express route can shorten the journey by 22 days and reduce one-way carbon emissions by approximately 50%.

However, shipping via the NSR remains controversial due the environmental impact on the delicate Arctic eco-system, and the lack of support in the highly isolated region if vessels get into trouble or are involved in a casualty.

In the first half of the summer-autumn navigation season of the NSR up to the end of August there were 52 transits according to the Centre for High North Logistics (CHNL).

In 2018, China’s Arctic Policy was released, which clearly stated that China expects to work with all parties to build a "Polar Silk Road" by developing and utilizing Arctic shipping routes.

“The opening of the express shipping service is an important practice that extends the outcomes of Arctic cooperation between China and other parties to the global logistics system,” said Zhejiang Seaport Group.

HONG KONG, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Chinese-controlled container line Sea Legend will launch the first direct China-Europe route via the Arctic this week, the Global Times reported on Monday, in a move set to almost halve express shipping times between the two locations.

Sea Legend will send its first ship via the North Sea Route (NSR) on September 24, the state-run newspaper reported, citing a statement from the Ningbo Zhoushan Port (601018.SS), opens new tab. The journey is expected to take about 18 days, it said.

Goods from China have long travelled to Europe around the Cape of Good Hope, taking at least 40 days, but the loss of Arctic sea ice driven by global warming has made the NSR increasingly accessible.

Over the past four decades, the Arctic has warmed about four times faster than the global average, resulting in a dramatic reduction in sea ice and creating seasonal windows for commercial shipping.

Container ship Istanbul Bridge will leave Ningbo Zhoushan on Wednesday and is expected to arrive in Felixstowe, Britain's largest container port, on October 10, the Global Times said.

The shorter journey is expected to reduce carbon emissions by about 50%, it added, citing the port.
Ningbo Zhoushan Port did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While shorter voyages can reduce fuel use and lower voyage-level CO₂ emissions, climate experts warn increased traffic in the Arctic increases environmental risks and disturbances to marine mammals.

It can also pose heightened safety challenges due to extreme weather and limited supporting infrastructure.

The previous fastest route for China-Europe express shipping was 26 days from Ningbo Zhoushan to Wilhelmshaven in Germany, the paper said, citing the port. The route began operations last year.
