SINGAPORE - Three youths were arrested by police yesterday for their suspected involvement in a case of bicycle theft.

Police received a report of bicycle theft in the vicinity of West Coast Road last Friday. They conducted ground enquiries and managed to identify the suspects with the aid of CCTV footage. The suspects were arrested near the West Coast Road housing estate and the stolen bicycle was recovered.

Investigations against the three suspects are ongoing. They are also believed to be involved in another two cases of bicycle theft.

If convicted of bicycle theft, the suspects could be sentenced up to 3 years imprisonment, or be fined, or both.

Police advised bicycle owners to take the following steps to safeguard their bicycles from theft:

- Keep your bicycle inside your house when you are not using it. If you need to park your bicycle at a public place, park at a designated bicycle parking bay. Indiscriminate parking may result in enforcement actions being taken by relevant agencies;

- Lock your bicycle when left unattended, even if it is only for a short while. All removable bicycle components should be secured;

- Use a durable lock. You can consider using a U-lock that provides better security compared to cable locks or use a bicycle lock with an alarm feature.

- Make unique permanent identification marks such as engravings or affix the Bicycle Security Label on your bicycle. The Bicycle Security Label comes with a unique serial number that helps you and Police to identify your bicycle if it is stolen. You can approach any Neighbourhood Police Centre with your bicycle to collect a label.
