Three mice crucified on tree with message 'I was wrong, I repent'

threeblindmice2.jpg

Looks like the exterminator's been hanging out at Mel Gibson's house again. Photos of three mice bound to a tree in Chengdu with a note reading "I was wrong, I repent" have garnered over 8,000 reposts on Weibo. It's unclear who's behind it or what the intended message is but netizens speculate it's directed at corrupt officials:

NetEase user 莫谈国事哦: It will cheer the people greatly when corrupted officials are paraded publicly on the street.

NetEase user 花開o : There are rat thieves all over the country. These rats are fat and big, running amuck across the country and they disguise themselves as civil servants, but our police pretend to be not aware of the situation.

NetEase user 正义鹰派 : I suppose it will take deterring effect if those sexually assaulting small girls can be paraded in this way.

Now, we all know officials are responsible for some unsavory deeds but crucifying animals to get your point across seems a bit harsh and medieval. Maybe try sending an angry letter? Unfortunately this isn't the first time people have used animals as political whipping boys in China (a practice known as weiquan, 维权) .

Two years ago, a Shenzhen contractor made headlines after hanging two dogs to protest the demolition of his housing complex - probably the only instance where we rooted for the evictors.
