Man who smashed beer bottles over ex-girlfriend's head jailed

A man who got into a violent argument with his ex-girlfriend at a coffee shop smashed a few glass beer bottles over her head, a court heard on Friday (14 December).
Phang Weng Seng, 56, was jailed at the State Courts for a total of 22 weeks, having pleaded guilty to six charges – two counts each of mischief and causing hurt, and one count each of disorderly behaviour and doing a rash act to endanger the personal safety of others.
On 11 November last year, during an argument with his then girlfriend, Phang threw her mobile phone to the ground. The damage to the phone needed $300 worth of repairs.
On 18 March this year, after they had broken up, the woman went to a coffee shop in Toa Payoh Lorong 4 to have drinks with her friends. Phang, who had been drinking separately, approached her and started talking to her about their past relationship.
When the discussion got heated, Phang took a glass beer bottle and smashed it over her head thrice. He then grabbed another bottle and smashed it over her head once.
Despite the victim falling to the ground, Phang persisted. He took a few more bottles and smashed them over the victim’s head again.
The ex-boyfriend was later separated by the victim’s friends and passers-by. The victim, now 50, was sent to hospital with two 5cm cuts and one 2.5cm cut on the head.
Threw items down from 8th floor, assaulted woman
On 14 June, Phang went to his ex-girlfriend’s house with a packet of food. She refused to open her gate and told him to leave.
Angry, he picked up a broom with a metal pole from the common corridor and threw the broom and a flower pot down from the 8th floor of the block.
Two months later, the ex-girlfriend saw Phang at her lift lobby. He was drunk and told her that he had brought her food.
When she rejected his offer, he slapped her face, and then pushed her against the wall. When she tried to get help, he pushed her and she fell down. And when she tried to call the police, he threw the phone on the floor.
The woman later managed to flee from Phang, but he caught up with her. While she was trying to use a spare phone to call the police, Phang again snatched the phone and threw it to the floor. She later managed to call the police.
On 10 September, Phang went to the woman’s home to talk to her shortly after midnight. But he ended up shouting outside her home. The next month, Phang again turned up at her home. He shouted and banged on her doors and windows.
On both occasions, he was shouting in the presence of police officers and refused to cooperate with them.
