This one's days are numbered

Google has some bad news for Microsoft; the days of the PC are coming to an end. This is according to the Google VP for Global Ad Operations, John Herlihy.

Speaking at the Digital Landscapes Conference, which is taking place in Ireland, Herlihy claimed that the days of the desktop PC were coming to an end and that people would be using mobile computing and browsers for all of their PC based tasks.

Herlihy stated that desktop computers, as we know them, have around three years left. Just enough time for Microsoft to put a stable release of Windows 7!

In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs.

Mobile makes the world’s information universally accessible. Because there’s more information and because it will be hard to sift through it all, that’s why search will become more and more important. This will create new opportunities for new entrepreneurs to create new business models – ubiquity first, revenue later.
.
And for this one...just a matter of time for its burial.

And in the world of IT, who knows? Maybe mobile computing and browsers will be upended by something else?

Product life cycle is getting much too short.
LKY is right on this, but whether one should keep changing every day in order to make a living remains to be seen.

It seems that service industry is the way to go,minus leegalised gaming dens of course

Where there is no growth potential, quick death awaits for that product or services.

Modern capitalism rule 101 on product survival or extinction.

I'm certainly not going to run Photoshop and CaptureOne on a 7" screen. In fact, I've just ordered a 30" screen from the local Eizo dealer.

I wonder what the numerous shops in Sim Lim are going to do
in the future. Not enough market for all to sell iPads and look alikes.

Besides smart fones are taking over all the side trades like camera,
mp3 etc.

Never taken pictures with a phone in my life. I use a proper camera. Don't listen to MP3 music either. It sounds like crap.

I bet you still use your cassette player to listen to your AC/DC and Def Leppard!

Never had a cassette player at home. There was one in the car which was there when I bought the vehicle.

I went from vinyl to CD and I'm now back with vinyl for certain genres. I also have a blu ray player so I can't be a dinosaur yet. ;)

Packing multiple functions into one device is always a compromise. I prefer to use a gadget that is dedicated to a single task.
