"It depends whether they take a serious approach to discuss the issues or whether they take a tactical approach and just use it to score political points. I hope that we will be able to move forward in a constructive direction," Mr Lee said.

He was talking about the fact that he expects more robust debates in the next Parliament and his comment reminds one that George Bush made when he was courting other countries' collaboration for the Iraq war: It is either my way or the highway. We all know what happened to GB - he is still being ridiculed to day.

He has already decided that the opposition is out to create trouble for the government - without even the first word being uttered in the august house. A statesman would have said something along the following line - "It is good that the electorate has finally been granted the wish for having opposition voices. I believe that they are good men and women and I am sure they will be able to play their small part in contributing to the Singapore we all want it to be. The government looks forward to their active participation in working with the government in steering through the difficult seas ahead. And along the way, we hope that the opposition will be able to see why certain things cannot be done and that they will help the government to convince the ground of some hard decisions with which some people will not be happy with."

But then, again, I fantasise. In all likelihood, he is planning how to fix the opposition.

To come back to the point - the translation of the PM's statement is : "the 40% who voted the opposition are daft and we are going to ignore them."
