why does a monk need an income???? for what???

We can't all be like LKY where everything is being paid by the taxpayers of Spore: free rent at the Istana, free medical, free maid & bodyguards services, million dollar salaries & pension. He doesn't even have to pay taxes

Not to pass judgement on the men of the ROBes, I happen to get acquainted with a young novice monk from Taiwan some years back during my work, his job was to assist the senior clerics in funeral duties at a famous temple. For such a young monk, the money he has in his bank account, was impressive. I could say equivalent to that of a Manager in those years, way back. There is little wonder that they drive expensive cars & it won't be a surprise that, they were donated by some rich, 'tai tais'!!:p

bro, my impression of a monk (from tv i admit) is that he suppose to live frugally. if really got rich tai tai donate a merces to the temple, he should have change it to a working vehicle (ie. a van) and use the extra cash from the sale of the merces to add to the funds for the temple.

i am not stopping them to earn a buck but to charge $1200 for a couple nite (at most 3hrs each) is outright robbery. Now they even have the cheek to complain about competition.

personally i think they no need to worry about competition from foreign monks but the number of old folks turning to foreign religion, ie christianty. Most if not all of my family elders converted to christianty despite burning joss stick for the first 60 years of their lives. the funny thing is not all their children are christians so if this trend continue, soon nobody will conduct traditional funeral rites.
