I have lived in the USA for a while and contrary to what PM Lee suggests, the Americans are not divided between Republicans and Democrats. Most Americans respect and accept other Americans despite their political affiliations. They accept political victories and defeats in their stride.
John McCain for example, when he lost the last US Presidential election to Obama said, "I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him but offering our next president our goodwill and earnest effort to find ways to come together, to find the necessary compromises to bridge our differences and help restore our prosperity, defend our security in a dangerous world and leave our children and grandchildren a st
ronger, better country than we inherited. Whatever our differences we are fellow Americans."
This is the reason why America remains the superpower of the world.
In contrast, what has the PAP done to winning opposition members in an election? Deny upgrading, appoint PAP members as PA advisers, defamation law suits, name calling...
If you still wonder why the nation is divided, it is not because of the political affiliations of the people of Singapore, but because of the divisive politics of the PAP.
