Chitchat This coronavirus is a big deal.

Currently, Vietnam has only 268 reported cases and no death. It does not mean covid-19 is "no big deal". The Vietnamese government recognized very early that the "Wuhan virus is a big deal" and took the epidemic very seriously.

"Viet Nam shows how you can contain COVID-19 with limited resources"

1) "Swift action:
On 1 February, Viet Nam kicked off a series of initiatives to tackle the spread of COVID-19. It suspended all flights to and from China. It also decided to keep schools closed after the lunar New Year break. Two weeks later, a 21-day quarantine was imposed in Vinh Phuc province, north of Hanoi. "
2) Its anti-coronavirus measures have gone on to include mandatory 14-day quarantines for anyone arriving in Viet Nam and the cancellation of all foreign flights. It has also isolated infected people and then set about tracking down anyone they might have come into contact with.
3)“Neighbours know if you come from a foreign country,” said Truong Huu Khanh, head of the department of infectious diseases at Ho Chi Minh City Children’s hospital. “If an infected person is in the area, they will report this.”

It is a war:
"How Vietnam is winning its 'war' on coronavirus"
https://www.dw.com/en/how-vietnam-is-winning-its-war-on-coronavirus/a-52929967

1) "During the Tet New Year celebrations at the end of January, Vietnam's government said it was "declaring war" on the coronavirus, although the outbreak at that time was still confined to China. Premier Nguyen Xuan Phuc said during a meeting of Vietnam's ruling Communist Party that it would not be long before the coronavirus reached the country. "Fighting this epidemic, means fighting the enemy," said Phuc."

2) "To take the fight to coronavirus, Vietnam instituted rigorous quarantine policies, and carried out complete tracing of all people who came in contact with the virus. These measures were implemented much earlier in the course of the epidemic than in China, where lockdowns of entire cities were used as a last resort to keep the virus from spreading further."

3)"For example, on February 12, Vietnam put an entire town of 10,000 near Hanoi under quarantine for three weeks. At this time, there were only 10 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the entire country. Authorities also widely and meticulously documented anyone who potentially came in contact with the virus."

The US and Europe initially did not take the coronavirus epidemic raging in China seriously enough and is now paying a heavy price.

Singapore's case is different. It has a large foreign workforce living very closely in dormitories; nothing much can be done to prevent the current outbreak within this group. Do we move them all to, say, Pulau Ubin and quarantine them there? Or let them run loose and have Singapore become another Italy? Make your choice.

Vietnam has commie roots, it is well-acquainted with the tricks of its red neighbour up north.

North Korea was also one of the first countries to close off its border with China, while most of the rest of the world was still stupidly waiting for further instructions from Uncle Tedros.

From the little I know, Vietnam seems a very difficult country to deal with. Deng Xiaopeng learned a lesson well trying to fight a border war with Vietnam. It is the only country in the world which has won a war with the US. They seem to have people with good judgments. It is a fact that having a single party government helps.

Taiwan too seems to have done very well in this pandemic.

Another thing about the current pandemic. It may cause a world depression worst than the Great Depression of the 1930s. Whether we like it or not, the world's economy is held at ransom by the US. This is because the world's economy runs on the US dollar. If the US government refuses to cooperate with the rest of the world in the way to handle the economic fallout from this coronavirus pandemic, then a great depression will occur. It is what happened in the 1930s which is known as "beggar-thy-neighbor" policy where countries enacted tariffs to protect their own trade resulting in a total contraction of world trade - thus the great depression. Every country's GDP go down together. Whether this happens or not is in the hands of the US government.

Latest figure: In the first quarter of 2020, China's GDP contracted by about 7%, the first time since 1976. For many decades now, the GDP growth of China had always been above 6%. In 2008, it was said China helped by fiscal stimulus trying to maintain world trade; it ameliorated the seriousness of the financial crisis. This time around, no financial engineering of printing money would help. We have all printed money. Japan will just pay every of its residents with about USD900; Singapore got SGD600 each. SIA...etc.

In a great depression, don't put too much hope in a stockmarket recovery unless you can ride through all the bottoms - the current bottom may be just one false bottom.

What if the US November election dethrone an insane president and bring in a real devil!

Vietnam was just waiting for this incident to happen and use it as an excuse to close its border with China.
China is not exactly a friendly neighbour.
