World's Best Places To Live
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Although the answer likely varies from person to person, there are several universal factors that make any spot a great place to live. To get a sense of the best places to call home, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) assembles annual rankings of 140 major cities worldwide based on which have the most ideal living conditions.

The rankings are based on over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five categories: stability, health care, culture/environment, education and infrastructure. The EIU tasks analysts and in-city contributors to assess qualitative indicators, while using a relative gauge for quantitative factors. The EIU found that for most cities, livability has been unaffected by the recession, as most factors - such as infrastructure and crime levels - have not shifted.

Each city is given an overall livability rating that is weighted between 1-100, with 100 being ideal living conditions and 1 considered intolerable. Each individual category factors into the overall ranking on weighted basis.

Australia has 3 cities in top 10!

Vancouver, i heard, is a very nice place to live in as well. A lot of Chinese, esp HKers. Heard Whistler is nice place.

But very very cold.

Re: The World best places to live

Whether it is cold or mild, it is all relative. I prefer it when there is a cold season, when the lake freezes to kill the bacteria before we swim the next summer. Charlie from Toronto which can be as cold as minus 20C and as hot as 33C, but May, June and Sep are almost ideal with day time high of 12 to 25C. More than 25C is too hot for me.

The attached is the criteria at which the cities are measured and their actual scores. The 5 criteria are:

• Stability
• Health Care
• Education
• Infrastructure
• Culture & Environment

1. What do you think Singapore will score?

What do you think Singapore score is in the 5 criteria. Can Singapore score 100% in all five making Singapore the world best place to live?

2. Higher Score does not necessary means better

Compare Melbourne and Vancouver: Melbourne scores 96.5% with less than perfect scores in Stability and Culture & Environment. Vancouver on the other hand scores 98% with less than perfect scores in Stability and Infrastructure.

Melbourne, Australia - Overall Livability Rating: 96.5
Stability: 95
Infrastructure: 100
Culture & Environment: 95.1

Vancouver, Canada- Overall Livability Rating: 98.0
Stability: 95
Infrastructure: 96.4
Culture & Environment: 100

Do you want 100% in Infrastructure or Culture & Environment?

3. All Cities in this list are good

Looking at all the scores, they all have an overall livability rating above 95% which makes them all good cities to live in.

There are plenty of other cities that scores 95.6%, 95.5%, 95.4%, 95.3%,... 94%, 93%, 92%, 91%, 90%... that are not listed, cities like Brisbane, San Francisco, Scaramento, Denver, Boston, New York etc that are not listed, so they should be plenty of places to choose from.

I agree that Singapore should score 100% in all categories(even if there were
1 million categories). The survey is not reflective of reality and highly inaccurate. S'pore is Lumbur One - no horse run:biggrin:

The politicians and the civil servants may believe that they should be the number one. Perhaps, the surveyors forgot to include your city in the Top Ten. With respect, I believe that it may not be awarded 100% for its Health Care (may be good but not free universal health care), and not 100% for its Culture and Environment.

Nothing is free in this world, more so on health care - it is one of the most expensive service to the public. Health care is paid for in a variety of forms - outright cash (Singapore?), insurance premiums, taxes etc.

The only free thing is this world is oxygen, the rest is paid for in one form or another

A health care system that is financed by insurance premiums and taxation as in the case of Canada has it's limitations. The following are examples:

The best place to live is the one which is livable for you.
All the Top 10 cities have homeless people and underprivileged suburbs.
If I am LKY, I will love to live in Singapore because I do not have to worry about laws, money, and I expect things done fast and to my standard.

Vancouver, Canada has been on top of the list for the longest time.

last time watch those serial shows on SBC (when it was still known as that, before changing to TCS, Mediacorp).... they would depict people migrating over to Vancouver for the better life. etc.

looks like some things dun really change at all.

My mama say never dine in HK restaurants because the triad would come rushing in with meat cleavers slaughtering anyone in their path. Yes - if they are robbing, they rob with guns
