SINGAPORE - He was speeding with his eyes closed when he crashed his car into a maid who was walking along a sheltered footpath.
But instead of helping her, Sy Yong Da, 26, drove away and sent his car to a workshop to try to have it repaired to cover up what he had done.
The maid, Ms Domielyn Santos Ocampo, 40, was later found dead at the scene.
She leaves behind two sons, aged eight and 19, and her husband, in the Philippines.
On Friday (June 11), Sy was jailed for 6½ years, and will be disqualified from holding all classes of driving licences for a period of 10 years upon his release from prison.
He pleaded guilty to one count each of dangerous driving, failing to render assistance and obstruction of justice.

Another two charges for failing to stop after the accident and removing his vehicle from the scene were taken into consideration for sentencing.
At about 6am on Dec 7, 2019, Sy drove his silver Lexus at about 78kmh to 81kmh on Farrer Road - a road with a speed limit of 70kmh - towards the direction of Queensway.
He was intoxicated at the time and was sleepy, closing his eyes as he veered across two lanes and crashed into the sheltered footpath.
He ran his car into Ms Ocampo, who was on her way back home from the market, causing her to be flung onto a pillar.

Sy immediately steered back onto the road and left her for dead, Deputy Public Prosecutor Samyata Ravindran told the court.
Sy drove away from the scene, went home to his condo unit at Spanish Village and called a towing company that he found online.
His car was towed away at about 7.30am.
He later went down to the workshop in Kaki Bukit, waiting outside from 9.15am, and handed over the car keys when it finally opened at 10am.
Sy then went home to sleep.

It took five investigation officers to track Sy down, after they found debris from the car, including a broken number plate holder at the scene.
When questioned, he told them where the car was and took them to the workshop.
The car was seized before repairs were done. The owner of the workshop did not proceed with the repairs because Sy had not provided a police report detailing the accident.
A splatter of Ms Ocampo's blood and shreds of her clothing were found on the car, which was severely damaged with a cracked front windscreen and a broken bonnet, bumper and headlamp.
The court heard that Sy had been drinking beer mixed with cognac for several hours before the crash and slept very little. But he decided to take his female friend, identified as one "Alicia", out for a meal at a McDonald's outlet in Ang Mo Kio and drove her home at about 5.35am despite being sleepy and intoxicated.
The prosecution had urged the court to jail Sy for seven years and disqualify him from holding all classes of driving licences for at least 10 years after his release.
Sy was granted bail of $20,000 to settle his personal affairs and to have a meal with his family once Covid-19 restrictions allow dining in at eateries.
He is expected to surrender himself on June 22.
For killing Ms Ocampo, he could have been jailed for up to 10 years.
For obstructing the course of justice, he could have been jailed for up to seven years or fined, or both.

SINGAPORE - After he was fired from his job, a warehouse worker at an online retailer slashed two directors with a chopper - killing one and grievously hurting the other.
Yee Jing Man spared a third director but ordered his superior to eat a red packet containing $20 that the man had given him for Chinese New Year.
He then barricaded the office entrance with tables and chairs and pointed the chopper and a knife at his colleagues to stop them from calling the police, before he stabbed and slashed himself with the weapons.
The 24-year-old Malaysian was sentenced to 20 years' jail on Wednesday (June 9) for the attack on March 11, 2019, at the office of e-commerce company Jiji in Sungei Kadut Loop.
He pleaded guilty to one count of culpable homicide for killing Mr Lin Xinjie, 29, and causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon by slashing Mr Li Mingqiao, 30.
Eight other charges were taken into consideration, including one of criminal intimidation for threatening the third director, Mr Ryan Pan Zai Xing, 29, and four of wrongful confinement.

After his arrest, Yee was assessed to be suffering from major depressive disorder, which significantly reduced his responsibility for his actions.
The High Court heard that he started working for the company in March 2017 after his girlfriend, who was an employee, recommended him to Mr Lin.
Yee initially performed well at work. Mr Lin gave him a red packet with $999 for Chinese New Year in 2018 and offered to promote him to warehouse manager with an increase in salary from $1,700 to $2,000.
Yee rejected the offer, as he did not want the additional workload and stress, the court heard.

From September 2018, his performance deteriorated and he did not show up at work with increasing frequency.
Court documents stated that he was absent for 69 days starting from Dec 1, 2017.

He also bore grudges against his bosses. He felt that Mr Lin had scolded him unreasonably and that Mr Li was sarcastic to him.
By February 2019, Yee began to visualise killing the directors with a chopper, especially Mr Lin and Mr Li.
He had a better relationship with Mr Pan, who helped him with his work and talked to him frequently, said prosecutors.
Yee also decided that he would take his own life after killing the trio as he did not want to be a fugitive and felt there was no purpose to life if he had to constantly worry about working.
On Feb 12, 2019, after his girlfriend told him that Mr Lin wanted to fire him, Yee bought a chopper from a provision shop. But he eventually changed his mind about killing Mr Lin.
Yee then took the rest of the month off and spent his time at home playing mobile games and searching online for ways to kill people efficiently.
He returned to work on March 1, 2019 but stopped showing up by March 6.
On March 11, his girlfriend forwarded him a message from Mr Pan saying that Yee no longer needed to come to work.
Angered by the message, he decided to carry out his plan to attack the three directors and headed for the office with the chopper and a ceramic knife in his bag.
At about 12.55pm, Yee walked to Mr Li, who was at his desk, and slashed his head and neck from the back.

Yee then swung the chopper at the back of Mr Lin's neck a few times, slashing the back of his head, neck, right forearm and right index finger.
He then threatened Mr Pan with the chopper and the director complied with Yee's demand to put the red packet in his mouth.
One of the employees who was barricaded in the office called the police.
Yee then stabbed his stomach and slashed his wrist, uttering "I have no other way to go".
Police arrived at about 1.05pm and restrained him after a struggle.
Mr Lin was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Mr Li underwent emergency surgery and was discharged on March 16.
Mr Li suffered significant scarring and still attends physiotherapy due to weakness from his injuries.

SINGAPORE - A semi-retired businessman who fatally stabbed his son-in-law in front of a lunchtime crowd three years ago was sentenced to 8½ years' jail on Monday (Sept 21), in what a High Court judge described as a “tragic” case.
Tan Nam Seng, 72, was unhappy with how the younger man had treated his daughter and believed that it was part of a ploy to cheat him of his shipping business.
He had pleaded guilty last month to a reduced charge of culpable homicide for stabbing Mr Spencer Tuppani, 39, in the chest three times outside a Telok Ayer Street coffee shop at about 1.20pm on July 10, 2017.
Closed-circuit television footage played in court showed Mr Tuppani running away and collapsing in front of a restaurant in Boon Tat Street.
The older man was seen in the footage kicking Mr Tuppani twice in the face and chasing passers-by away.
“This was a vicious and brazen killing carried out in broad daylight on an unsuspecting victim having a meal in a coffee shop in the Central Business District,” said Justice Dedar Singh Gill in sentencing.

However, the judge noted that Tan was suffering from major depressive disorder at the time.
The judge said Tan’s “fast-deteriorating health” also weighed heavily on his mind. In the three years he spent in custody, Tan has contracted tuberculosis and suffered two heart attacks, among other medical issues.
The jail term was backdated to Tan’s date of arrest. With the usual one-third remission, he is expected to be released in about 2½ years’ time.
On July 10, 2017, Tan was on the way to the office at Cecil Court when he saw Mr Tuppani in Telok Ayer Street. When he reached his office, Tan went to the pantry to look for a knife, and then headed to the coffee shop.

He told Mr Tuppani “you are too much” in Hokkien before pulling the knife out of his sling bag and stabbing the younger man.
After Mr Tuppani collapsed in Boon Tat Street, Tan told passers-by: “This is my son-in-law, don’t help him, let him die.”
He then placed the knife on a table beside him and calmly sat on a nearby chair.
While waiting for the police to arrive, Tan phoned his daughter.
“I can’t sleep at night. I have done it. I have killed him. Don’t cry. I am old already. I am not scared (of) going to jail,” he told her.

Tan was originally charged with murder but the charge was reduced after a psychiatric report said that his depression impaired his mental responsibility for his actions.
On Monday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Jian Yi sought 12 years’ jail, calling the attack a case of “vigilante justice”, motivated by revenge, that resulted in a brutal and public killing.

There is a need to deter others from taking matters into their own hands, he argued.
Even if Mr Tuppani was planning to take his business away from him, “killing him is not the answer”, said the DPP.
Defence counsel Wee Pan Lee sought 7½ years’ jail, arguing that Tan’s sentence should not be more than a life imprisonment.
Mr Wee said Tan felt betrayed by Mr Tuppani, whom he treated almost like his own son.

Tan started off as a coolie, worked his way up and grew his business over the years.
Mr Wee said Mr Tuppani’s mother and younger brother lived in the Tan’s family home.
Mr Tuppani hired his parents as employees even though they were not involved in the business, and used company funds to pay for his lavish lifestyle and his brother’s overseas education, he said.
Shyller conceived a fourth child in 2015 but was forced to terminate the pregnancy by Mr Tuppani, said Mr Wee.

In 2016, Mr Tuppani persuaded the Tans to sell the company to GKE Corporation.
However, Tan and his daughter received only $450,000 each, instead of the $1 million and GKE shares they expected, said Mr Wee.
In 2017, Tan’s daughter Shyller discovered that Mr Tuppani had bought a property and had a second family with another woman.

Tan found out that Mr Tuppani had been recording the couple’s arguments and believed he intended to use them in divorce proceedings.
However, Mr Tuppani assured him that he would not claim for custody of his three children with Shyller.
But after Tan’s younger daughter Sherry was suspended from the company, Tan found out that his son-in-law had started custody claims.
“It then dawned on the accused that he had fallen victim to Spencer’s grand ploy and it was his plan all along to keep all the GKE shares and the balance of the cash for himself. The constant reassurances and promises were lies and were all part of Spencer’s ploy to destroy his family, by taking over the business and fighting for custody over the grandchildren.”

SINGAPORE - A domestic worker from Indonesia who stabbed her employer more than 90 times at her Telok Kurau house nearly five years ago was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder on Friday (April 23).
The High Court convicted Daryati, who goes by one name, a second time of murdering Madam Seow Kim Choo after rejecting her defence that she was suffering from a mental disorder that reduced her responsibility for the killing.
Madam Seow, 59, was killed on June 7, 2016. She had 94 knife wounds, most of which were on her head and neck.
Daryati, 28, had originally faced a charge under Section 300(a) of the Penal Code, for killing with the intention to cause death, which carries the mandatory death penalty.
Partway through the trial, which was heard for 17 days between April 23, 2019, and March 4 last year, the prosecution reduced the charge to murder under Section 300(c).
The reduced charge carries life imprisonment or the death sentence, but prosecutors said they would not be seeking the death penalty.

After she was convicted of the lesser charge, Daryati changed her mind and wanted to run the defence of diminished responsibility to further reduce the charge to culpable homicide.
The conviction was set aside and the trial resumed.
Daryati did not dispute the physical acts of killing Madam Seow, but relied on the evidence of Dr Tommy Tan that she suffered from persistent depressive disorder with intermittent major depressive disorder.
The prosecution's expert, Dr Jaydip Sarkar, said Daryati was not suffering from any mental disorder at the time.

On Friday, High Court judge Valerie Thean found that Dr Tan's evidence did not stand up to scrutiny and that the diagnostic criteria were not met.
Justice Thean noted that Dr Tan's report was based on Daryati's self-reported symptoms with no independent corroborative facts.
She said that Daryati's capacity to function was not impaired - she was able to conceal various weapons around the house in planning her attack on Madam Seow.
After Daryati was convicted, Deputy Public Prosecutor Wong Kok Weng withdrew a stood-down charge of attempted murder of Madam Seow's husband, Mr Ong Thiam Soon, who is 62 this year.
Daryati, who started working for the family on April 13, 2016, said she was treated well.
However, she grew homesick and pined for her lover Indah, who was working in Hong Kong as a domestic maid.
She hatched a plan to get back her passport, which was kept in a locked safe in the master bedroom, and to steal money from Madam Seow so that she can start a business when she returned to Indonesia.
Daryati geared up for the confrontation by sharpening one knife and hiding a second, smaller knife in a basket under the sink of a toilet on the second floor of the house.
She ultimately took along another weapon - a long knife from the storeroom - when she confronted Madam Seow.
Daryati slit and stabbed Madam Seow's neck, and as the victim lay bleeding on the toilet floor, she retrieved the knife she had earlier hidden, and continued stabbing her employer.
Daryati used so much force that at least three of the blows caused fractures to the victim's face.

Cabby, 73, gets jail, 8-year driving ban for fatally crashing into jaywalking pedestrian

SINGAPORE — A taxi driver was sentenced to 16 weeks’ jail and an eight-year driving ban on Friday (June 11) for fatally colliding into a pedestrian who was jaywalking.

Tan Lye Soo, 73, pleaded guilty to one charge under the Road Traffic Act of driving without reasonable consideration for other road users and causing the 68-year-old victim’s death.

The cabby of six years had been convicted of similar traffic-related offences, including speeding, in 1996 and 2006, the court heard.

He had started his shift at 6pm on Nov 26, 2019 and was slated to finish it at 6am the next morning.

He took a break along Gangsa Road at 4am, then woke up at 4.45am and began heading to the Vicom inspection centre along Bukit Batok Street 23 in order to fill his petrol tank.

At about 5.20am, he was driving on the fourth lane along Bukit Batok East Avenue 6, towards the junction with Bukit Batok Avenue 3, when the victim crossed the street when the red man was showing.

Tan had the right of way but nevertheless failed to keep a proper lookout. He did not notice the victim crossing from his right to left until it was too late for him to react.

After crashing into the victim, Tan came to a stop after the junction and got down to help him. With the help of other passersby, Tan helped to turn the victim over onto his back.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Samyata Ravindran told the court that based on a Health Sciences Authority report, the victim would have been discernible about 10 seconds before the collision.

Around that point, Tan was about 113m from the pedestrian crossing, but reacted only 0.1 seconds before the collision.

The victim was taken in a conscious state to the National University Hospital, but fell unconscious on the way there. He had suffered a traumatic brain injury, pelvic fracture and open fracture of the left ankle.

Despite receiving treatment, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead four days after the accident.

Tan’s taxi was inspected afterwards and found to be in serviceable condition. There was little traffic and the weather was fine during the accident.

As a repeat offender, he could have been jailed for up to six years or fined up to S$20,000, or punished with both. Those convicted can also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least eight years.
