Many retirees grieve the loss of their career, feel stressed about how to fill the 8-9 hours daily that work used to occupy, experience boredom, anxiety about their loss of income, depression, loss of purpose, fear of mental decline etc. Can retirees on this forum please share your secrets about how you spend your days productively without having to work?

If stress is affecting the mental health of seniors who have set aside enough to retire, then walk away now. Look at what 3 years of stress has done to professional football coach, Mikel Arteta. It is written all over his face.

It depends on what was their leetirement age.
Those par see mai chow kind and finally need to chow at 69, doesn't need to worLee too much about loss of income, as their lifespan left, are not many years to go.

Mental decline is not something that only by working can sustain it. It is just an excuse for greedy people to continue working, for as long as they could.
There are many things you can do to maintain the mental health, even after leetiring . If your mental is fated to decline, even by working, it will still decline.

Boredom is also another excuse.
Most work in itself is boring.

Loss of purpose in life, perhaps could be the fear of most leetirees.

My 2 fear after leetirement are
1. Depletion of the medisave account. As it will becum a one way negative traffic
2. Loss of purpose in life.

Other than these 2, everything else definitely are better after leetirement.

You missed one piece of the puzzle. Their partners refusing intimacy, and for women, it's because of menopause.

This alone affects the whole mental health of every man. And the biggest cause of arguments and elderly divorce. Little is being talked about and done about it.

Some men also refuse to be affectionate and intimate with the spouse after retiring. Giving them the cold shoulder, silent treatment, and turned into a housemate instead of being the spouse anymore.

These mostly afflicts PAP supporters as they display the inability to reason and conclude actions to correct the situation.

Manage your own investment and make youtube video during retirement...time pass easily

To many China educated men and Chinese communist, 林則徐 is their hero because he was the guy who burnt the opium and 南大 phd mentioned this in one of his lyrics

林則徐烧鸦片都烧不完

I suspect 梁文福 might have copied the idea of Billy Joel

Both songs have the same concept to narrate the history

For me I had to retire after a very stress career of 29 years in a US MNC. My cardiac situation did not allow me to work further.

I started to learn about trading in US stock options and now able to occupy my time trading on options during the weekday evenings..

That gave me a way to spend my time each day..

If we retire at 63 and the average life span of a S'porean male is 83, then we need to have enough savings and investments to last us at least 20 years. Without this, we just have to continue working.

1. Life expectancy for male S'porean 83 years
2. Current age 55 years for example
3. Savings and investments must last 28 years
4. Current savings and investments divided by 28 years
5. You get your budget for each year (taking into account inflation)

I heard of retirees who leave their homes to head to the same coffeeshop or hawker centre to spend time with old friends over lunch and coffee. Such a routine is common among seniors for the company and to reminisce about their younger days. To most of them, these sessions are not to be missed. It is important for these seniors to relive their glory days because they lived through those moments together.

Over the years, the number of attendees will begin to dwindle until only an individual remains. His friends have left this world, and he must continue on his own thereafter. He will no longer be able to recall those good old days because the friends who were there are no longer here. The feeling of being left behind by old buddies who shared the happiest moments is devastating. The worse is that the lone survivor will not be able to expand that circle of friends any longer. One day, all of us will get separated from our loved ones. This is the circle of life. Spend your retirement years well

The problem with my marriage now is that we hardly have much time together because of long hours at the office and bringing work home. There is also little to talk about since we know each other inside out. Our conversations mostly revolve around paying bills, our children who are young adults and our respective aged parents. We have been married for 27 years.

I work remotely at Raffles Town Club or Tanglin Club on 1-2 days a week where I notice many retirees who spend almost the entire day there having breakfast, lunch, swimming, working out at the gym, reading, watching movies on their iPad or just relaxing on the sofa.

I notice many wealthy retirees who have both health and money, so there are a lot of things they can do to occupy their time like travelling overseas, playing golf, going for long drives, spending time at their country club, shopping, fine dining etc. For low SES seniors, their options are far more limited like hanging out at the void deck, hawker centre, coffeeshop, CC, public libraries or shopping malls.
