Tale of two cities
'In Melbourne, two passengers lifted my pram up without prompting.'
MADAM SEE LAY KENG: 'There were no vacant seats when I boarded service 190 from Stevens Road to Bukit Panjang on Thursday, carrying my 20-month-old son. When no one gave up their seat, the bus driver appealed to passengers to let me have a seat. No one responded. When his second appeal failed, he asked a young man, who sheepishly gave up his seat. A few years ago in Melbourne, I was waiting for a tram with my baby in a pram. When the tram arrived, two passengers alighted and lifted my pram up, without prompting. Singapore is not a naturally gracious society yet. We may trumpet the many achievements of our youth, who undertake Samaritan missions abroad. But will they truly apply civic conscientiousness at home, and in the unheralded grind of daily routine? I thank the bus driver of TIB 543H who stood out in this respect.'

This is a direct result of overpriced housing

When people spend all their hours working at jobs they hate in order to make the mortgage payment, they become tired, depressed and unwilling to share. That makes them callous and unkind

When property prices fall by 50% we will begin to see a semblance of kindness, and when they fall by 80% we will become a cultured nation

MADAM SEE LAY KENG:

In Melbourne, the transportation service is NOT SUBSIDIZED!. In Singapore, the fares are SUBZIDIZED, don't belive me, ask RAYMOND LIMP!:p

That is why, Singaporeans are not obliged to lift up prams (skirts, they will!), give up their seats to Pregnant women, old men & women, invalids, etc.., for the seats they are sitting on is highly PRIZED & SUBSIDIZED!.

Madam See Lay Keng, please, where have you been?,are you born here?, you have left years ago, & come back?, then be a BORN AGAIN SINGAPOREAN...expect no acts of charity!:D, the government is leading by example!
