Wage Structure and Power Structure

The powerless get underpaid while the powerful overpay themselves. This is the hard truth that stands out in the current debate over economic inequality in Singapore. In his brilliant analysis, Lucky Tan pinpoints where the problem lies. A weak trade union leadership lends unquestioning support to a government policy that results in underpaying Singapore workers.
To quote Lucky Tan,
“Today we see the extreme outcomes…..- workers who work honest full time jobs earning less than what they need to live on and leaders who get paid millions for regurgitating old ideas and peddling failed solutions. Things are not going to improve for our workers because they have little power to bring about outcomes that will make their lives better.”
(see: Our income gap reflects the unequal power distribution in our society)
But things can improve for our workers if they cast their vote wisely in GE 2016 and vote in a government and trade union leadership that truly care for the workers.
When workers all over the world celebrate Labour Day on 1st May, the NTUC top brass should look, not at their own CPF statements of accounts but the statements of ordinary workers, and then search their souls.
