Motoring expert John Cadogan says dash cams are increasingly being used as evidence when people get into car accidents.
"If there's a dispute with the cops or an insurance company, you can just bring up the vision and say here's what happened," Mr Cadogan said.
Gokulan Thava Pri Ya says if it wasn't for his dash cam, he would have had to pay $2000 insurance excess for a accident that wasn't his fault.
Motorcyclist Mr Thava Pri Ya had a close call with another car, and says he was in shock after the accident.
"Having a dash cam installed I knew that the incident was recorded, and it wouldn't be an issue because it wasn't my fault," Mr Thava Pri Ya said.
"By the time I took everything in, I missed some small detail such as the colour of the car and what the car looked like. It was handy that it was caught on my dash cam."
Rowan Fetzer from Auto Black Box says there are now thousands of dash cameras on Australian roads, capturing the worst drivers on the road.
"Recently one of our customers was attacked viciously by a road rage incident," Mr Fetzer said.
"Other examples include red light runners, people dangerously cutting in across intersections and people hitting the back of other cars."
