The Positives from the Bukit Batok BE

The key positive I took away from the Bukit Batok BE that will significantly help improve the opposition's fight in the next GE. Thanks to Dr Chee and Dr Tambayh, PAP have now publicly informed Sinkies that the upgrading carrots are "revenue neutral", in other words the opposition parties can also provide the same publicly funded upgrading and NRPs as the PAP. This will reduce the unfair disadvantage in WP and SDP's election campaigns against PAP.

Another positive thanks to Sylvia Lim in parliament recently, PAP have publicly disallowed themselves from using the PA and RCs for PAP's political campaigning as seen in the BB by-election. This will help reduce some unfair disadvantage for WP and SDP in the next GE.

With the unfair disadvantages reduced in this areas, WP and SDP now needs to improve their municipal and grassroots campaign messages to the electorate to win over more apathetic voters and swing voters in the next GE. But still much more needs to be done to level the playing field, WP and SDP needs to continue voicing out PAP's dirty politics and pork barrel politics.

One more positive of the Bukit Batok BE results is that Dr Chee and SDP are making inroads into the hearts and minds of heartland voters. Previously it was thought that SDP appeals more to the middle class private housing dwellers, which was probably why Dr Chee and Dr Tambayh contested in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC where 45% of residents live in private housing. .

But unlike PAP, SDP is made up mainly of heartlanders living in HDB flats. SDP's focus has always been on the poor and elderly, and calling for more public spending on medical and social services for heartlanders. SDP's campaign has been very much for the heartlanders, so it shouldn't be surprising that it's getting more appealing to heartlanders.

SDP is on the right track with their bread and butter and municipal centric campaign, and their tireless campaign walking the entire Bukit Batok and reaching out to every resident face to face. Hope SDP continues doing all this for the next election.

Another positive from the Bukit Batok by-election is that it debunks the GRC argument of PAP, the results show that Sinkies don't vote on racial lines. PAP's dirty politics of GRCs should be abolished and all constituencies should become SMCs for the next GE. Removing GRCs is good for Singapore as SMCs are much more meritocratic, weak candidates can no longer hide in GRCs and ride the coat tails of others into parliament

With GRCs gone and all wards are SMCs, PAP will no longer be able to gerrymander by hiding wards in GRCs like what PAP did to Joo Chiat in the last GE.

PAP is able to gerrymander because they control the elections dept. GRCs, gerrymandering and controlling the elections dept are PAP's dirty politics and undemocratic practices, that gives PAP hugely unfair advantages over the opposition.

Hope WP and SDP voice out and publicly push for GRCs to be abolished for the next GE.

NSP calls for the GRC system to be torn down for true democracy in Singapore

By onlinecitizen on May 8, 2016

In a press statement issued by the National Solidarity Party (NSP) , penned by its Secretary-General, Lim Tean, the party calls for the Group Representation Constituency system (GRC) to be torn down so that true democracy can take root in Singapore.

In the original stated purpose of GRCs that was created in 1988, it was to guarantee a minimum representation of minorities in Parliament and ensure that there would always be a multiracial Parliament instead of one made up of a single race.

The full press statement of NSP on the GRC system

The Bukit Batok By-Election yesterday was noteworthy for the following reasons;

First, it makes total nonsense of the PAP’s continued claim that the Group Representation Constituency system (GRC) is required to ensure the election of minority candidates into Parliament. The election of the PAP minority candidate in Bukit Batok , and many others before him such as Michael Palmer in Punggol East in 2011 and JB Jeyeratnam in Anson in 1980 show that Singaporeans are not averse to electing minority candidates. The PAP’s continued insistence on the GRC system reeks of political deception at its crudest; nothing more than a mechanism to entrench its power by parachuting unworthy PAP candidates into Parliament.

One of the most glaring and egregious example of the cynical use of the GRC system is to be found in Tampines GRC , where the minority member of the GRC is the Environment Minister himself . It is clear that his role in the GRC, together with that of the Finance Minister is to shepherd 3 other PAP candidates into Parliament to make up the PAP numbers.

There is absolutely no basis to contend that the Environment Minister is unable to be elected without the GRC system. If indeed he is unable to get elected on his own accord in a Single Member Constituency (SMC) , then he should not be in Parliament .

We call on Singaporeans to demand that the PAP put an end to the GRC system immediately, so that true democracy can take root in Singapore.

Second, the Bukit Batok results demonstrate that the Singapore voter will punish the PAP for its brand of gutter politics, which has become the hallmark of its election strategy. The Singaporean voter has no appreciation for character assassins, who do nothing to elevate our political discourse.

Finally, the Bukit Batok results confirm our belief that the results of GE2015 were an aberration, due to SG50 and the death of Lee Kuan Yew, which the PAP took maximum advantage of. It is clear that the policies of the PAP are rejected by at least 40 % of Singaporeans.

The NSP is greatly encouraged by the Bukit Batok by-election results, and we call on all our volunteers and supporters to step up their efforts to engage Singaporeans and to spread the message of our Party, so that we will make the breakthrough in the next election and be elected into Parliament to serve the people of Singapore.

The only positive is that we now know that Dr Cheebye can't win

- an Indian
- with no political experience
- doing this part-time
- despite the previous PAP candidate having an affair
- despite the fact that people know that even if he wins the PAP still remain the govt

Bro, WP and Pritam already clarified that planned NRP projects were completed by HDB in Aljunied. Paul Thambyah cited WP and Pritam during the campaign. So it is nothing new.

One more positive from the Bukit Batok BE. Surveys conducted by Blackbox shows that PAP's GE2015 results is just a blip due to the LKY effect and SG50 “feel good” factor, the Bukit Batok BE results further indicates that PAP's votes will decline after GE2015 .

Interesting analysis of the GE2015 results and the Bukit Batok BE results in the article below.

Dr Chee’s peformance in Bt Batok shows opposition support intact

May 8, 2016

By: 永久浪客/Forever Vagabond

Last year’s GE2015 was a seen as the beginning of a downhill path for opposition parties, with large swings of votes going against the oppositions in the whole of Singapore.

In GE2011, PAP’s votes was 60.1% but in GE2015, it improved against opposition votes by a massive 9.8% to hit 69.9%.

Everyone at first, couldn’t comprehend what had happened. Even the PAP camp themselves were genuinely surprised by the great swing supporting them.

Slowly, various analysts and polls began to unravel the mystery with regard to the super-performance by PAP in the last GE. One of the notable polling done to help explain PAP’s big win last year came from the research firm Blackbox Research.

GE2015 big win due to LKY effect

Many political analysts have concluded that PAP’s big win in GE2015 was a one-off event.

Blackbox Research managing director David Black commented that in particular, the death of Singapore’s first PM Lee Kuan Yew was found to have a significant “multiplier effect” (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/ge15-result-apparent-well/2490094.html).

Surveys conducted by Blackbox after GE 2015 found that the SG50 “feel good” factor and Mr Lee’s death were the two most-cited answers from respondents who were asked why they thought more people voted for the PAP compared with GE 2011.

“(Mr Lee’s death) had a multiplier effect. There was never really any doubt the PAP was going to get maybe the same (vote share) or above what they had the last time, but it was the kind of super-boost (or) adrenaline that was added that got them that much further,” said Mr Black.

Still, despite the strong mandate for the PAP, two-thirds of respondents indicated that a change in government was possible in the next five decades, Blackbox added.

Dr Chee’s peformance in Bt Batok by-election comparable to WP’s in Punggol East

Now, let’s compare apple to apple, the by-elections of Punggol East in 2013 and Bt Batok yesterday, both triggered by the infidelity of PAP MPs.

In theory, Bt Batok’s by-election will be seen as a tougher constituency to gain votes for opposition. Firstly, the voters in Bt Batok are much older than those in Punggol East because Bt Batok is a very old mature estate. The elderly will tend to have more affections for PAP because of the difficult times they have gone through after post-WWII in the 50s and 60s. For them, they see that lives have improved under the PAP if one is to compare Singapore now and the Singapore in the 50s or 60s.

Then there is the backdrop. Punggol East by-election came after GE2011 when sentiments against the ruling party was still bad. Bt Batok by-election came just on the heel of a successful GE2015 when the PAP scored a victorious 69.9%. Also, Punggol East by-election was about 1.5 years after GE2011 whereas Bt Batok by-election came just 8 months after last GE, with things still fresh in the same group of people’s minds.

Another point to note is that Punggol East by-election was contested by WP, which has a much better branding than SDP at the moment. And the results?

[Punggol East]
GE2011 (33,281) – PAP 54.5%, WP 41.0%
BE2013 (31,649) – PAP 43.7%, WP 54.5%

PAP lost 10.8%
WP gained 13.5%

[Bt Batok]
GE2015 (27,077) – PAP 73.0%, SDP 26.4%
BE2016 (25,727) – PAP 61.2%, SDP 38.8%

PAP lost 11.8%
SDP gained 12.4%

So, even though Dr Chee lost in yesterday’s by-election, but if one was to compare the results of both by-elections, Dr Chee’s performance is comparably good. It is also noted that the 38.8% garnered by Dr Chee is already a much better result than SDP’s averages in the last 2 GEs, including GE2011:

[SDP average]
GE 2011 – 36.8%
GE 2015 – 31.2%

More importantly, Dr Chee’s result has assured opposition supporters that the 40% general support for the oppositions is still intact.

Whatever it is, one thing is for sure. Yesterday’s by-election result shows that the “LKY effect” is already gone and PM Lee can’t count on his father anymore to help him in GE2020.

I'm thanking Dr Tambyah and Dr Chee that their press statements and rally speeches managed to draw a response from PAP confirming that the public funding of NRPs and upgrading are "revenue neutral". Previously PAP never clarified that during election and many voters are unsure about it.

This public clarification by PAP is very important for the next GE to allay the fears of many swing voters to vote for WP and SDP.

How many times do voters have to tell Dr Cheebye to fuck off? Surely at some point the message has to sink in!

Chee did not get elected. So what? All the other losers who get less should fark off too? You should thank the opposition for contesting so we all get a public holiday every 5 years!
