Malay is the national language, but English is the official working language, the lingua franca.

Rajaratnam wanted a race-blind Singapore, not a Malay or Chinese dominated Singapore. It's a natural feeling that many Indians share, being the smallest demographic group here. Many of my Indian friends say that we should get rid of 'Race' on our NRIC.

English is perfect; it's not the mother tongue of any of the main ethnic groups in Singapore. Not to mention it's the language of commerce and of the free world.
