Language is a curious thing in this multi-cultural country. There are four official languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. In school, lessons are conducted in English but a second language is mandatory. Students also have the option of learning a third language, most often German, French or Japanese.
As a rapidly globalizing majority Chinese population surrounded by Malay-speaking Muslim nations, it is no surprise that Singapore faces a “language identity crisis.”
