the must-haves for every chinese new year

peh tor fish or also known as "sweet potato fish" han tze herr is a must-have for chinese new year. but it's very costly! during this time, its flesh is especially sweet and tasty.

For me a must have is to celebrate it with my mum again, she's really old, today was a scare, family doc sent her to A&E for heart palpitation, all is well but need to go heart centre next week. I live overseas which made me even more concern anyway will see her next weekend, and hope another year and another year

steady bro...everyday counts...may it be another strong happy and properous year for your mum and your family....

I walked around china town yesterday. Nothing to buy. I am not a candy person, the modern candies taste like rubber.

Last year bought curly bamboo, NEA came to my house and they asked me for $200 "Ang Bao" because they saw something wriggling inside the bamboo roots and told us in future don't buy this kind of plants.

Will go chinatown again, and probably get the traditional rabbit candy and some some oranges so that I can squeeze the juice after CNY is over.

Not all plants are cheap. The ZZ plants at Ikea is very expensive - $19, whereas nursery sell around $12
Thos chrysans potted plant will not last, you need to put under sun and water. I buy fresh cut chrysans for the same price, placed in two vases and can last at least a week, but remember to change water frequently to avoid the smell.

my favorite would be forsythia which is also known as yin chun hwa. it's a woody branch and has many bright small yellow flowers that filled up a whole branch. it comes in a bunddle about 10 stalks. quite expensive but worth it!
