Menacing: The doll, based on Katniss from the Hunger Games, is a far cry from the traditional pink-loving stiletto-wearing Barbie doll

Killer Barbie hits the shelves as Mattel releases the first Hunger Games-inspired doll

Barbie has had a make-under, as revealed in the first photos of the Katniss doll, inspired by the heroine of the Hunger Games.

Mattel has launched its special collection doll, based on 16-year-old Katniss.

The make-up free figurine is decked out in her signature boots and black-and-orange jacket, with a trademark mockingjay pin, braid and bow and arrow.

It is a far cry from the traditional pink-loving Barbie doll, of the the Malibu Dream House and stiletto heels variety.

Since its 2008 release, the Hunger Games book trilogy by author Suzanne Collins has sold more than 11 million copies, and has been published in 47 foreign-language editions.

The movie has stayed atop the box office for three consecutive weeks after its $155 million opening last month, and has now passed the $300 million mark in total revenue.

The doll's precise resemblance to Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence in the film, is another example of fans' loyalty to the franchise.

'Hopefully Hunger Games fans can appreciate the attention to detail,' designer Bill Greening told Entertainment Weekly.

'I am a huge Hunger Games fan and loved all three books, so it was truly an amazing experience for me to be able to design the Katniss Barbie doll…I think it really pays tribute to Katniss and The Hunger Games.'

Pre-orders for the Katniss Barbie opened today at Barbiecollector.com, according to Mattel, the toy maker behind the doll.

The special collection doll will be widely available in stores in August, the company said.

Katniss Barbie is the latest product in a line of merchandise being produced at breakneck speed to capitalize on the wildly popular franchise.

Fans can also purchase Hunger Games-themed nail polish, cookbooks, posters, clothes and even a workout class at New York Sports Club gyms.

Mattel describes the new Katniss Barbie as 'created specifically for the adult collector'.

David Spitz of production company Lionsgate, said: 'This is the birth of a franchise. To launch in this fashion is mindboggling.'

Mattel's Hunger Games Barbie Looks... Not a Whole Lot Like Jennifer Lawrence

Mattel has unveiled the first look at their Hunger Games-themed Katniss Everdeen Barbie doll ($29.95), available for pre-order today and on shelves in August, and the result is... kinda close to what I envisioned when I read Suzanne Collins' novels. Not that District 12's underfed hunter gal ever hewed that close to Barbie's usual unattainably bosomy dimensions in most readers' minds, but something in Katniss-Barbie's face is appropriately feline, with just the merest hint of the full-lipped pout that Jennifer Lawrence brought to the screen.

Still, I had to laugh at creator Bill Greening's explanation (via EW) for how Katniss-Barbie, clad in her Games survival gear, was designed: “Hopefully Hunger Games fans can appreciate the attention to detail. The doll’s minimalistic style and details — such as her loosely braided hair and makeup-free look — also really embody the heroic character Katniss.”

Adding eyeshadow, mascara and eyeliner to Katniss's pre-bloodbath look isn't exactly what I'd call "make-up free," but at least Greening kept from sexifying Katniss up when it came to her outfit. Pure Eddie Bauer chic, modeled on her getup from the movie. (I'm sure Katniss's flamboyant Capitol dresses are also en route to shelves for maximum styling options.)

What's more satisfying at first glance is seeing that Katniss-Barbie looks more like the Katniss I'd imagined when reading the books. Lawrence does stellar work in the role and is arguably one the best actresses of her generation who might've been up for it, but I'd always had a more ethnic-looking Katniss in mind. And while Mattel's design is just ethnically-ambiguous enough, I'd say it runs closer to Katniss's description on paper than the one captured onscreen in the film adaptation.

'The Hunger Games' Wins Box Office For Fourth Consecutive Week

"The Hunger Games" is the first movie since "Avatar" to top the box office for four weekends in a row.

The adaptation of the popular young adult novel fended off competition from the Farrelly brothers' "The Three Stooges," the positively reviewed "Cabin in the Woods" and sci-fi indie "Lockout" over the weekend, collecting another $21.5 million in North American theaters for an estimated domestic gross of $337.1 million.

"Games" is expected to take in at least $370 million domestically and has already earned more than $500 million worldwide, even as director Gary Ross announced he will not return for the follow-up, "Catching Fire," which is set to reunite Jennifer Lawrence and company next year.

The #2 and #3 spots on the box-office scorecard represented a stark contrast in critical opinion. At press time, "The Three Stooges" had a "rotten" 41 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, which aggregates reviews from film critics, while "The Cabin in the Woods" boasted a "fresh" 92 percent. With $17.1 million in receipts, "Stooges" was the biggest opening for any movie directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly in over 10 years, having lined up more with early successes like "There's Something About Mary." Following the departures of Jim Carrey and Sean Penn from the long-gestating project, "Stooges" ultimately cast lesser-known actors in the iconic "Stooges" roles.

Speaking of long-in-the-works movies, "Cabin in the Woods" was originally scheduled to be in theaters in 2009. The horror thriller fell victim to MGM's bankruptcy proceedings before eventually being rescued by Lionsgate, the studio behind "The Hunger Games." Co-written by "Avengers" filmmaker Joss Whedon and his "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" collaborator Drew Goddard (who directed), "Cabin" set social media accounts abuzz in film critic circles. It's the type of movie whose supporters have been careful not to spoil the plot. MTV News' own Josh Horowitz tweeted, "Awesome thing alert! 'The Cabin in the Woods' is out. It's real good. That is all."

The only other widely released new film brave enough to do battle with "The Hunger Games" was "Lockout," which floundered with an estimated $6.3 million debut. Produced by action maestro Luc Besson (who directed 1994's classic "Léon: The Professional"), the sci-fi flick's opening fared worse than recent Besson-associated projects including "Transporter 3" ($12.1 million) and "Colombiana" ($10.4 million). "Lockout" had a "rotten" 32 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes at press time. "Lockout" played in 2,308 theaters; by comparison, "Stooges" opened in 3,477 theaters and "Cabin," in 2,811. "The Hunger Games" played in 3,916 theaters.

In 2009, "Avatar" held on to the top spot for seven consecutive weekends, but "Titanic," also helmed by Jim Cameron, still has the top spot both in terms of all-time gross ($600.7 million in the U.S. alone) and consecutive weekends at #1 (15!). The "Titanic 3D" re-release overseen by conversion-convert Cameron was #4 over the weekend, taking in another $11.6 million for a 12-day total of $44.4 million (bringing the overall haul for "Titanic" to $645.2 million).

More than 1,500 people lost their lives when the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic 100 years ago this month — the wreckage wasn't found until 1985. Cameron's epic 1997 film blends facts with romantic fiction. "Titanic" added another record to its box-office scorecard over the weekend as the re-release enjoyed the highest opening ever in China, taking in $58 million.

"American Reunion" rounded out the top five with $10.7 million in its second weekend. The latest entry in the "American Pie" franchise has made $39.9 million to date. All three of the previous theatrically released entries passed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office, a feat that doesn't seem likely for "Reunion."

Zac Efron will be next up to bat against "The Hunger Games" when "The Lucky One" arrives in theaters this weekend, alongside comedian Steve Harvey's "Think Like a Man" and Disneynature's True Life Adventure "Chimpanzee." Joss Whedon will have another crack at the box-office crown with "Marvel's The Avengers" in May.

The final instalment in bestselling book trilogy The Hunger Games will be split into two films.

According to film studio Lionsgate, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be released in November 2014, with Part 2 to follow 12 months later.

The film franchise is based on the teen science-fiction books by Suzanne Collins.

The first movie, starring Jennifer Lawrence, smashed box office records when it was released in March.

It has now taken $678 million (£436m) worldwide and is currently the year's second highest-grossing film in the US, behind The Avengers.

Lawrence plays rebel heroine Katniss Everdeen, who is trained to fight to the death in televised competitions in a future US society called Panem.

The second instalment. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is due in cinemas in November 2013 and will be directed by Francis Lawrence of I Am Legend fame.

Earlier this week it was revealed that Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman has signed up to play games master Plutarch Heavensbee in the sequel.

Filming is due to start in September, with Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Donald Sutherland all confirmed to reprise their original roles.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay follows the example set by the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises.

In both cases, the final books in the teen literary franchises have generated two separate films.

Collins' book trilogy currently holds the top three places in the UK's children's bestseller list of 2012.

Can't wait for Catching Fire!

CANNES, France -- Little could lessen the fever-pitched excitement for "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," but heavy rain nevertheless dampened the film's lavish Cannes party.

Stars of the "Hunger Games" sequel, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Sam Clafin, arrived Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival. "Catching Fire," perhaps more than any other film not actually screening at Cannes, is seeking to use the festival's global platform to promote the highly anticipated sequel.

Digital flame billboards have constantly burned by the Majestic Barriere hotel. The cast posed for photographers Saturday. And in the evening, Lionsgate held a lavish soiree beside the beach on the Croisette, complete with flowing liquid chocolate and parading models dressed in the film's ornate costumes.

But a planned stunt at the party to promote the film was scuttled due to the poor weather that has plagued the first five days of the French Riviera festival. Lawrence made an enthusiastic appearance, but later fled, grimacing – like other guests – at the cold raindrops.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will be released in late November.
