Increased efforts to round up stray dogs at Punggol Waterway by authorities have been met with protests by animal lovers.

The trapping and culling efforts were put in place after a jogger was scratched and bitten by stray dogs in the park last Wednesday.

The Straits Times reported today that at least 25 activists gathered on Tuesday at the place where the attack occurred to meet members of the media and protest against the culling efforts.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) told the English daily it has been carrying out operations in the area since September.

Four out of the 26 dogs it has caught so far will be put down as they have been deemed aggressive.

External service providers have also been engaged to help in the trapping and culling as some of the dogs have proved elusive, AVA said.

According to The Straits Times, pet lovers have taken to social media to protest against the culling efforts.

A Facebook group created to plead for the strays' lives called on Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Member of Parliament Ms Penny Low and the AVA to stop the culling.

It has since garned 961 "likes".

There have also been petitions on Ms Penny Low's and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's Facebook page.

The AVA posted a note on its Facebook page on Wednesday morning saying that the management of stray animals is an emotive issue with no easy solution.

"On one hand, we share the concerns of animal lovers and seek to safeguard the welfare of animals in Singapore.

"On the other hand, we also have to ensure the safety of Singaporeans and consider those who may be afraid of dogs," the statement said.

Rabies is also one of its concerns.

"The primary purpose of controlling the stray dog population is for the control and prevention of rabies, which is fatal to both humans and animals.

"Although Singapore has been free from rabies for over 50 years, rabies remains a real threat as the disease exists in many parts of our region.

A large stray dog population can exacerbate the spread of rabies to other animals and humans if they are exposed and bitten by a rabies-infected animal that gained entry into Singapore," the statement continued.

Animal lovers reportedly visited the AVA's Centre for Animal Welfare and Control at Pasir Panjang to try to "bail out" the dogs.

This requires about $500 in fees. The activists said they were unsuccessful.

Ask the activists to adopt these dogs. Ask them to put their money where their mouth is. They can house these dogs or pay for the dogs to be kept in kennels.

they love the dogs. .....ah but not that much. Some of them anyway.

I'm with on this, Scroobal. The activists are a totally impractical lot. They misunderstood their role of one of showing love to these animals no matter what the danger they pose to human beings. They were some cases where pitbulls had attacked and killed little children, and yet, the activists said pitbulls are not by nature aggressive and attacks only when provoked, so don't put them down. Innocent lives had been lost and they are still in a state of denial that these bloody dogs kill. And don't get started on shark activists. They go round leading a holier than thou attitude but actually armed with total fictitious statistics to create an alarm as to what actually is a benign situation. To me, these bloody activists had nothing better to do. At least those who campaign against human trafficking are really contributing to society and I take my hat off to them

They even started a petitioned to the PM... Just plain silly when the man is occupied with so many important matters to tend to..

We should be fighting to look after the poor, the needy and those that have neglected by this govt. And there are a fair few to look after. Yet we have people who really do not understand their priorities. What the authorities are doing is no different to best developed countries including those who have reputable democracies. You just cannot allow stray animals to roam free. We have better health and hygiene because there was concerted effort and programmes to bring under control the various vectors and agents that transmit diseases.

Well said, exactly my thoughts too. Also the earlier post by Zeddy.

Good one bro. To your point about having more important things to do.

Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's.

Since there was no divine intervention, the issue has to land square on the lap of Caesar.

running S'pore is like a mayor running a city.............how tough can it be ?

BY THE WAY............how come no one culls cats............cats are good-for-nothing useless eaters..........they don't cull cats becoz of Muslims, right ?

I bet you won't see those animal lovers/animal rights activists protest the killing of pigs, chickens and cows.

It's because dogs are cute and have puppy eyes, that's why they vehemently defend dogs.

It is like racism, only far worse.

In fact, sometimes you see those obnoxious bourgeoisie arseholes, so-called 'dog lovers', tart up their little poodles and chihuahuas with a hair perm, a dog shirt and cute accessories. This is common with women, and falls into either one of the following categories:

1) Pampered princess from a rich family.
2) Older, unmarried woman who has no kids, therefore uses cute pet dogs to console her barren womb.

To hell with them.

Keeping pets is one thing but these are strays and they are attacking people.

Cats don't go out of their way to attack humans. Even when they turn aggressive, they can easily be scared off. Cats aren't good-for-nothing useless eaters. They keep the rodent population down. You probably don't realize it because cats tend to hunt at night and that is when you are sleeping.
