'If US is sidelined, 2 Koreas can work towards peace and stability'

US & Canada-led summit wants more sanctions on N. Korea beyond the UN’s
"It is particularly ironic... That while this... Thawing of tensions is going on between North and South... It's happening... In Vancouver, the former allies of South Korea are tightening the noose, increasing the rhetoric, raising the temperature," Shoebridge told RT after the US-led group decided to consider unilateral sanctions against Pyongyang Tuesday.

The US is adamant that it will apply not only economic and diplomatic pressure, but also issue military threats to force N. Korea to disarm. On Wednesday, Seoul and Washington "reaffirmed its security commitment to the defense of South Korea using all categories of its military capabilities," the Ministry of National Defense said. The allies also "agreed to continue the rotational deployment of US strategic assets to South Korea and nearby areas as long as North Korea's nuclear and missile threats persist."

The decision to keep up with military threats comes the same day as Donald Trump expressed doubt that the intra-Korean talks will lead to“anything meaningful.” The US president also warned that it is “very possible” that the standoff with North Korea might not be resolved peacefully. Charles Shoebridge criticized Washington's foreign policy, pointing out that Seoul and Pyongyang can achieve much more if the US stops interfering in their"considerable diplomatic achievement."

"These talks themselves started on the back of South Korea agreeing to persuade America to at least pause its military exercises," Shoebridge told RT. "It appears to be the case when the interests and the foreign policy, and the actions of the United States are put to one side, local players are, to some degree at least, able to start finding local solutions, [and] make some progress towards securing their local interests, which is usually peace and stability."

China and Russia – two major regional players who were not invited to participate in the Vancouver summit this week – criticized Washington's pessimistic outlook of the Korean diplomatic process. Participants that gathered in Canada, while rejecting the Chinese-Russian 'double freeze' roadmap for easing Korean tensions, failed to provide any alternative, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In July 2017, Moscow and Beijing proposed the initiative that would see the US and its allies halting all major military exercises in the region in exchange for Pyongyang suspending its nuclear and ballistic missile program. The 'double freeze' initiative, however, was once again rebuffed by Washington Tuesday during the Vancouver summit.

Beijing also slammed the meeting, saying it was driven by a Cold War mentality. "When major parties to the Korean Peninsula issue are not present, such a meeting will not contribute to properly resolving the issue," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang pointed out Wednesday. "All parties should cherish the hard-won momentum of easing tension on the peninsula, support the efforts made by the DPRK and the ROK in improving ties, and double their commitment in alleviating the situation and promoting dialogues."

On Wednesday, North Korea agreed to allow a joint women's ice hockey team to participate at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics (February 9-25) and march together as one with their southern neighbor under a "unified Korea" flag at the opening ceremony.

The North also consented to send a 150-member delegation of athletes and cheerleaders to the Paralympic games in March. South Korean President Moon Jae-in once again expressed hope Wednesday that the inter-Korean talks will pave the way for broader dialogue between the United States and the North which could eventually lead to the resolution of the North Korean nuclear standoff.

North Korea and South Korea have agreed to march together under a single unified Korea flag at the Winter Olympics, according to South Korean officials.

Seoul's Unification Ministry says the Koreas reached the agreement during talks Wednesday at the border village of Panmunjom.

It says athletes from the two Koreas will march together under a "unification flag" depicting their peninsula during the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang.

The measures require approval by the International Olympic Committee, which will be consulted over the weekend.

The two countries have also agreed to form a shared women's ice hockey team in a historic moment for the peninsula. This will be the first time ever that a united team from the two Koreas has competed in the Olympics.

This follows the announcement, made earlier today, that North Korea will be sending a 230-person cheering squad to next month's Games as part of the country's 550-strong delegation, which will start arriving in South Korea on 25 January.

North and South Korea opened talks over the Winter Olympics last week - the first time in two years the two nations have been in dialogue.

This has offered respite from rising tensions over Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions, which it is pursuing in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

Despite an apparent thaw in relations between the two Koreas, Japan has urged caution over the North’s “charm offensive”.

“It is not the time to ease pressure, or to reward North Korea,” Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said. “The fact that North Korea is engaging in dialogue could be interpreted as proof that the sanctions are working.”

The initial proposals to form a joint ice hockey team were also met with apprehension, with concerns being raised raised that South Korean players could lose their place to competitors from the north.

Unification Ministry spokesman Baik Tae-hyun said on Wednesday that the government is aware of public concerns that adding North Korean players could displace South Koreans who have made the team.

Before Wednesday's announcement, South Korean President Moon Jae-in, during a visit to a training centre, told players: “I don’t know if it will happen, but a joint team will be a good opportunity for ice hockey to shed its sorrow as a less-preferred sport as many Koreans will take interest."

The two countries will march together under a “unification flag” at the Winter Olympics in South Korea and will compete as a unified team in the Olympics for the first time.

North Korea will send a 550-strong delegation, including 230 cheerleaders, 140 artists and 30 Taekwondo players to South Korea who will start arriving in the country from January 25.

The games take place between February 9 and 25 in Pyeongchang in South Korea.

North Korea has agreed to send a separate 150-strong delegation to the Paralympics which are held in March.

But the prospect of a combined team is unsettling for the South Korean players, the country’s women’s hockey head coach told Reuters last month, as in many winter sports, the South is much stronger than the North.

And tens of thousands of people have signed a petition opposing a unified team - the most popular petition has garnered more than 17,000 votes - urging the Blue House to scrap the plan.

What is the Korean Unification Flag?
North and South Korea have agreed to march under the Korean Unification Flag at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on February 9.

The flag depicts the peninsula as a united Korea - both North and South - and is used when the two countries participate as one team in a sporting event.
The background of the flag is white and in the centre there is a blue silhouette of the Korean peninsula including Jeju Island to the southwest and Ulleungdo and the Liancourt Rocks to the east.

The flag was first used in 1991 and the countries marched together under the flag in opening ceremonies including the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and the 2003 Summer Olympics in Athens, however the countries competed separately in these sporting events.

It is the first time the flag will be used at the Olympics where the countries will compete together.

North and South Korea to march under unified flag at Winter Olympics
North and South Korea have agreed to make a joint entrance under a unified Korean peninsula flag at the opening ceremony of the upcoming Winter Olympics. They will also send a combined women's ice hockey team.

North and South Korea agree joint women's ice hockey team
After intense negotiations, the two Koreas announced on Wednesday that they will make a joint entrance at next month's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Following a meeting in the truce village of Panmunjom, the latest in a string of recent talks between the two nations, Yonhap news agency reported that the countries will also send a united women's ice hockey team to the Games. The plan is still subject to approval by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Read more - Korean War allies consider further sanctions against North Korea

It has also emerged that a North Korean delegation will visit the South next week to take a look at facilities for the Games, which begin on February 9. Furthermore, South Korea will send some of its athletes to Masikryong, a ski resort in the North.

Last week, Pyongyang agreed to send athletes, officials and various performers to the Winter Olympics south of the border. The Pyeongchang Games are to take place just 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that divides the nations.

Head of the North Korean delegation Ri Son Gwon, center, arrives for talks in Panmunjom

The news will likely come as a boost to South Korea, with Seoul having sought to label the event a "peace Olympics" despite escalating tension over North Korea's nuclear weapons program, which has led to several UN Security Council sanctions.

Both North and South Korea will now discuss their decision with the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland on Saturday. The IOC must approve extra slots at the Games for athletes from the North after they failed to qualify or missed registration deadlines.

Should approval be granted, South Korean media suggest that about 10 North Korean athletes will travel to the Games. They will be part of a wider delegation of more than 400, including 230 cheerleaders, 140 artists and 30 Taekwondo players, a joint press statement released by Seoul's Unification Ministry said.

Since talk of the united ice hockey team was floated it has drawn criticism, particularly from athletes and coaches in the South. They raised the problematic issue of the players who will have to sacrifice their Olympic chance for their contemporaries from the North.

South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, has expressed his support for the united ice hockey team and the countries marching together while, before the talks, the North's chief delegate, Jon Jong-Su, said he "hopes that ties can open" between the countries.

However, not everyone has greeted the news so positively. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said the world should not be naive about North Korea's "charm offensive" over the Olympics.

"It is not the time to ease pressure, or to reward North Korea," Kono said. "The fact that North Korea is engaging in dialogue could be interpreted as proof that the sanctions are working."

Time will let Kim Jong Nuke build not only more nukes, but anti-aircraft and anti-carriers etc Missiles. His Kim Chi cousin might even help him and pass him intelligence against US fleets and potential attacks from Dotard etc.

Global Warming Climate Change and whole planet destruction caused only by JUST MAN. Everything including Man will Extinct in no time. Only way to save planet and man is to ELIMINATE MAJORITY 99.9% of 8 billion population ASAP.

War is the only correct way from our ancestors whole history.

Man made a TERRIBLE MISTAKE in recent century toward crappy Peace, and Humanity, all based on FALSE ASSUMPTION of Unlimited Supplies of Resources & Unlimited Tolerance of Exploitation + Destruction + Pollution by the planet caused by man to Pamper themselves. This is only a foolish suicide toward TOTAL EXTINCTION - when planet is ruined and resources exhausted. Man survived and lived for more than a million years here since caveman era, all with tiny population level and caused only little negligible destruction to planet. Everything was balanced and healthy - until the silly man made this TERRIBLE MISTAKE in recent century toward crappy Peace, and Humanity, called that the MODERN CIVILIZATION VALUES.

It is Completely Wrong, Completely Suicidal, Completely Stupid! And all the political and religious leaders don't know what to do and they completely neglected the Repeated Warnings from 15000 scientists of 184 nations, signed Doomsday Warning and published officially. There is no Scientific Solution to be expected.

Only WW3 mass carnage with nuke ASAP can save man from Total Extinction Suicide. A tiny amount of survivors to struggle against nuke pollution for 2 generations, after WW3, and STOP STUPIDITY FOREVER, NEVER REPEAT MISTAKE of MODERN CIVILIZATION.

I would love that you stand at the front line to start the whole process going.
