Salute to the forgotten troops and their family members.
Until now, they are still stateless and homeless.

Victims of circumstances. They couldn't go back because they were ROC troops and ROC lost to PRC on mainland.

You mean KMT troops, you should know plenty of them in Maesai

Yeah, KMT = ROC and CCP = PRC, I use these terms interchangeably as habit. One of my Thai ex-GF her grand dad was one of the KMT. Stateless and passportless till death. Payao.

If ex is mix then she must be really pretty

Just go to Thailand for two weeks and force yourself to speak to Thai. I agree with what some bros here said, the best teacher is a girlfriend. Go get one. Reading and writing can be learned after that by just buying a cheap kiddy book from a bookshop.

Commonsense. Learn to walk before you can run. Learn to talk before you can read. There's no hurry, that's true but eventually, you should enjoy the convenience of being able to read common signboards and menus. In most parts of Thailand, even in many parts of big cities like Bangkok etc., these are written in Thai only, no English.

Way back in 1982/3, met this girl in Haadyai, a new arrival to the cluster at Oliver massage. Because I go to Penang every month on company business, I took this opportunity to fly in to HD on MAS' MR75.00 return.

She was so green when I first booked her she didn't even know how the faucet in the bathroom work, and when she tried on the high heels I bought her, it was really comical. Later, much later, I learnt she was only 15. She was sold into the trade by her parents who were both KMT soldiers. She spoke Mandarin and, I was told, atrocious Thai.

She should be in her mid 40's now.

Understand they could all go to Taiwan if they wanted....

Not possible for most of them at that time as ROC on Taiwan had no ability and facility to repatriate them. Most of them gave up and settled down with local wives. Taiwan wasn't their homeland anyway, their homeland was on mainland.
