1. We are brought up to respect elders. Not to speak-up to them or argue with logic.
2. We have no freedom of choice. Our elders decided everything for us.
3. Elders are not taught to respect kids.
4. The children have no privacy of their own.
5. We are taught to be filial to our parents.
6. We must provide for our parents when they grow old.

So based on the above cafeterias alone, democracy cannot work in Asian societies. :D

To really promote democracy, our Asian values must really change to Angmo style standards.

So tough luck my friends!! LOL! :D

You speak as though westerners don't give a shit about their parents. Asians respect authority? Look at this list: List of rebellions in China

Hi Baluku:

The concepts you raised below weren't uniquely Asian. The modern Western Industrial Democracies were like that (and to a certain extent, parts of them still are); these societies were exactly like that right up to only recently. The strict values were their `values` too and were slowly eroded away over history, starting with the Protestant Movement, leading to the Age of Enlightenment, Age of Reasoning, The French Revolution, blah, blah, blah, right up to the sixties with the Liberal Movements, and Women`s Rights. When East met West in the Opium Wars, one side was a modern industrial power, and the other was a medieval state, in her last days. For us, the change came suddenly and we are in the throes of change.

We have democracy - one man, one vote; just that some of our social psyche still lives in generations in the past.

Cheers!
