It will be very surprising if they can get it back from the Russians at all. Most likely the data would have been destroyed.

It may or may not show who's behind the launch but one less piece of evidence will aid the blame game.

Me neither. I don't think a commercial plane will have instruments able to detect if they are tracked by a SAM site or locked on by missile hurtling towards it.

Agree with TS, they will not hand it back. The black box is able to provide clues to such things time of impact, and other aspects where they can piece together what brought it down.
