I REFER to Wednesday's report ('Change of editor at The Straits Times'). I first met Mr Han Fook Kwang eight years ago during a function held at News Centre - the Singapore Press Holdings' headquarters in Toa Payoh - where he and his colleagues took the opportunity to thank and show appreciation to readers who contributed to the Forum Page.
What struck me then was that he was a person who gave serious consideration to readers' feedback - both positive and negative. This motivates many readers to write in to share their views on a diverse range of issues.
Mr Han was instrumental in strengthening the Forum Page, which is a must-read for most ST readers, so much so that it has become a national institution.
He once gave an apt description of the Forum Page: 'If you read, say, a week's worth of letters, you'd have a pretty good idea what's bugging the population.'
Finally, many thanks to him for producing a paper that reports objectively, without fear or favour.

I'll spare the reporting standards of the ST this time. Suffice to say, what kind of English daily is it without a daily crossword?

All major english newspapers the world over have a daily crossword puzzle, 'cept the Straits Mimes.

Now they only have a crossword puzzle in the weekend paper. But weekend is family time. Weekdays at coffee/tea breaks is when people do the crosswords at the office cafeteria or pantry.

my guess is that the ang mohs used to do the xword puzzles when they were stationed here. After they left around the late 60s/early 70s

these puzzles were a little beyond the populace during that era.

ST must have realised that and stopped the cryptic ones but never bothered to replace it with the ordinary type.
