Dr Tan Cheng Bock went on a whirlwind tour of the island on Saturday to thank Singaporeans for their support during the recent presidential election.
He took to the road in a bright orange open-top bus with a team of some 20 volunteers. Starting from dawn, they went from Jurong to Little India to Hougang and Pasir Ris, making stops at markets and shopping malls along the way.
The tour is his way of saying thank you to voters for their support, said Dr Tan. Dr Tan came in second in the polls with 34.9 per cent of valid votes, losing to President Tony Tan Keng Yam, who received 35.2 per cent.
He received the warmest welcome at markets in Ayer Rajah, where he was Member of Parliament from 1980 to 2006. Supporters burst into loud applause and chanted his name, many jostling to take photos with him and get his signature on campaign souvenirs.
