u cannot like that explain to most people one la, most people never even flip a single page of the pali canon, and thus have no idea there is a section of teaching known as Dependent Origination (90 percent of the buddhist i talk to have no idea what is it about).

yes sir!
will introduce 十二因缘to as many good folks as possible :):):)

1) Buddhism is an off-shoot of Hinduism.
2) Both originated from India.

;)

Then what about Sikhism.

It originated from India too.

Is it an off-shoot of Hinduism?

Can anyone enlighten the forummers please.

Honestly,I rather keep the distance from this thread....or any religious thread for that matter.Because participants usually lack the depth for sensible discussion.Anyway my 2 cents worth...I know that it's worth far less than Zimbabwean currency.

First, can anyone define Hinduism?I am quite sure most Hindus themselves would bequite lost.If folks, here thinks that Hinduism revolves around the the Hindu Trinity consists of the TriGods-Lord Brahma (the creator), Lord Vishnu (the preserver) and Lord Shiva (the destroyer). I have news for you---none of the Upanishads and Vedas, sacred text of Hinduism mentions any by names.Hence you must understand Hiduism to understand Buddhism.....And for that matter, the differences between montheism--as in one God with several names(Judaism,Christianity and Islam) and polytheism.. you may than ask what about the million gods ?

One must understand that we are using the same word 'god' to apply to two entirely different concepts. In Hinduism the ultimate is beyond normal human comprehension. At best we can see imperfectly some aspects of that truth that is the basis for the universe. These aspects are symbolically represented by the various 'gods' and 'goddesses' of the Hindu pantheon. In that respect Chinese religious conceptualization is not far from it.

Now,to the question of Buddhism. What did Buddha preached?...the ultimum being nirvana which is also is a central concept and soteriological goal in every Indian religions.Remember this...any religion that enters the sub continent ultimately takes it own colors. There is no escape.Even Islam and Christianity....for example ,Sikhism--which essentially is Sufism sect of Islam. But ask any Sikh today and he will tell you that Sikhs are part of Hinduism. And to some extend Christianity in India---which emphasis more on idol worshiping.

Now,that I had said my piece.I shall hold my peace and say no more.

Thanks. That was very good.

You want to talk about hinduism i do know a bit. The real name is called santhana dharma. There are 5 major sects. They are the shiva, vishnu, ganesha, sun sect and murugan sect. Yes they aren't called that but i have forgotten how to spell those damn names. Anyway the murugan sect is actually under the shiva branch but murugan worshippers which are what the local indians mostly worship are seperate from the shiva branch but considered under the shiva umbrella. Is this difficult to understand?

There;s also more on the old gods like indra and so on whom are aryan gods. I used to have more knowledge on this but it's been some time since i have read up on crap like this.

All in all if ppl say that religion is just a fantasy created by man then obviously it applies to hinduism. Elephant headed gods with 4 arms anyone? You know how stupid that sounds yet somehow so few of you actually want to speak up about that?

From wiki it doesn't mention the sun deity at all and i suppose the murugan cult is considered to be part of the shiva sect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_deity

I still have a book talking about this hindu sect that worships surya.

Anyway most hindus in the south are mostly shiva worshippers while those in the north are vishnu ones. Vishun worshippers consider buddha to be an incarnation of vishun which the southerners reject,.

tried locating image of it, but cannot find any. but i really did saw this before when i was watching documentary and had a hell lot of time laughing

I am no scholar of Buddhist teachings nor its history too.

I see Buddhism as an off-shoot of Hinduism much like football being an off-shoot of rugby.

Surely Buddha must have started His practice with something as a point of reference. And Him being a Hindu prince, the choice is apparent. Buddha had also experimented with yogi-styled austerity, which didn't quite work for Him. I reckon "trial and error" was His modus operandi. :)

Who cares if buddhism is off shoot of hinduism? Is this supposed to mean something?

Chinese are no better with monkey god, pig god, tiger god, lion god, dragon god etc.
