The government is again considering legalising casinos to draw investment and tourism, a study submitted to the House of Representative on Friday showed, but such proposals have been losing bets in the past because of public disapproval.

The only gambling allowed in Thailand is on state-controlled horse races and the lottery. But at least 10% of Thais are addicted to gambling, the study, by a 60-member committee of government and opposition lawmakers, said.
Many in the industry believe a legal casino market in Thailand would be a huge success in drawing overseas visitors, providing strong competition for the world's biggest gambling hub Macau, the only place in China where citizens can legally gamble in casinos.

Legalisation of gambling has been discussed in the past but no government has gone ahead due to public opposition. In a 2021 opinion poll, 46.51% opposed legalised gambling due to moral and crime concerns, while 21.25% were supportive.
The previous parliament approved a similar study last year but the house was dissolved before the cabinet could consider it.

Under the proposals in the study, seen by Reuters, private companies would shoulder the cost of construction and operation of entertainment complexes comprising casinos while the government would be responsible for taxing and regulation, Sorawong Thienthong, vice chairman of the parliamentary committee, told Reuters.

"Thai and foreign companies with experience on this will be responsible for most of the investment," Mr Sorawong said.

He said an estimated minimum investment for a large complex would be 100 billion baht (US$2.79 billion).
A draft law on the casino idea is included in the study which will need parliamentary approval before it is forward to the cabinet for consideration.
No number of entertainment complexes or their location are specified but the committee recommended that a complex should be in a main tourist destination and within 100 kilometres (60 miles) of an airport.

Mr Sorawong said the study could be considered for parliament approval on March 28.

"We want to conclude the law and start selling licences to investors within this government," he said.

You do not need mega casinos like what sinkie did.
In London and Paris, the have small casinos. Free food and drinks to members.

They should seriously look at expanding their weed industry. They are the only cuntry that legalise this and they should really capitalise on it.

Quite the hot topic, ain't it? Personally, I reckon it's about time they gave it a serious think. Could be a game-changer for the tourism scene, ya know? Imagine the buzz it could bring to the country! But hey, it's not all fun and games, right? Gotta consider the potential downsides too. Like, how would it affect local businesses, or even the culture? Tough questions, for sure. If you wanna dive deeper into the convo, I found this cool site with more insights: https://themulligans.org/. Gives ya some food for thought on the matter.

The idea of legalizing gambling has been discussed for years, but concerns about social problems and crime have held it back. Recently, the government has started to reconsider, seeing potential economic benefits. If Thailand does move forward, it could follow the example of online platforms like https://aviatorgambling.games/de/ which offer safe and regulated gambling environments. However, the decision remains complex, with many factors to consider.

There is a rumour that Bangkok parliament is planning to build 8 casinos around Thailand.

The Thailand govt wanted to open KRA canal. But it costs USD 30 billion and take 10years. After opening, it need to maintain. How much will each ship want to pay for the 1 to 2 days passage of short time ? It will be better to go straits of Malacca for shipping company and owners.

Shipping company paid 400k to 700k just to use the passage of Suez canal per ship. How much does ship owner want to pay to use KRA canal ?

Thailand has all the weired ideas but it's not workable for that kind of society. Building KRA canal and legalizing casino ... it's not going to work.

Instead they should be working on how to develop their own industry and people.

In a vast country like Thailand, if one end of the nation is prosperous. It does not mean the well effect of the economy is pass around to the whole nation.

Hatyai is prosperous but that does not mean the positive effects will be felt in changmai or even Bangkok.
Hatyai will feel the effects of economic prosperity direct.

For geographiclly small place like this sink hole, if there's a 30billion investment in Tuas, the effect will be felt throughout the sinkhole.

If haatyai boom, entire southern Thailand will boom. I am surprise it has not attracted many manufacturers to southern Thailand. Nearest port is just a few hours, away in Penang. No need to build new port. Save money. Only problem is Malay authorities in Malaysia are not very business minded to promote and make it easier for trade to flourish. Border only opens between 8-6pm despite Thailand requesting 24 hour operation. Even worse, 8 am in Malaysia is 7 am in Thailand. And 6 pm in Malaysia is 5 in Thailand. So it's operation is shorter by 2 hours.

There a name being used as a middle man for the casinos master plan….. Gordon Tang is helping with this development.

Never say never. …. Judging by the way Genting stock prices has stalled for the past few sessions even though broking houses/market analysts says it is undervalue.

This is my take. What if they do an open bid for all 8 casinos to casino operators to come and built in Thailand eg MGM, Genting, They are probably going to mimick Singapore model and apply into their system.

Genting if they had stuck to just Malaysia, they would be ok.
But like other non bumi businesses, they want safe have elsewhere after making money locally. That is where they got hit.

By now 2024 .. the educated first world tourists had lose interest in casino gambling :coffee:

They should build good hotels & resorts to offer tourists a cheaper relax place for a family vacations
