Thai soldiers guard as anti-government demonstrators stage a rally outside the government house</td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td class="update"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td>

BANGKOK - Thailand's government agreed Tuesday to impose a harsh security law across the whole of Bangkok for the first time, ahead of fresh protests by supporters of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Internal Security Act allows the government to deploy troops, ban gatherings and impose curfews to control the so-called "Red Shirt" movement and will be in force across the capital from Saturday until December 14.

The "Red Shirts" say they will rally Saturday in central Bangkok, march near Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's offices the next day, remain on the streets until December 2 then disperse ahead of the king's birthday on December 5.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said his government needed to invoke the security law to ensure law and order during the 82nd birthday celebrations for the widely revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch.

"During that time the government will have to prepare for the trooping of the color and other state functions, so in order to ensure security the government will impose the Internal Security Act," he told reporters.

Abhisit said the government had to put the entire capital under the security law because demonstrators would likely march to several places in the city.

It is the sixth time this year that the Democrat Party-led government has imposed the act but previous occasions have been in limited areas of Bangkok and other cities.

The Red Shirts want Abhisit to quit and call fresh elections, saying that he came to power unfairly after allies of Thaksin were driven from government in December 2008 when rival "Yellow Shirts" blockaded Bangkok's airports.

In April rampaging Red Shirts forced the cancellation of an Asian summit and then rioted in Bangkok for two days, leaving two people dead.

Thaksin was toppled in a military coup in 2006 and is living in exile to avoid corruption charges, but he has stirred up a series of protests in the past year by videolink and telephone.

He angered the government earlier this month by visiting neighbouring Cambodia in his new capacity as an economic adviser to Phnom Penh.

The military coupe was done with a big flaw against Thaksin, they should had shot him or at least grabed him into a cage. There won't be so much scenes he can make today. His fucking puppet Samak just died today, and he is still on the fucking run.

If his gang want to play it up then suit them. Lure them out to riot and shot the fucking lot up clean, prepare 50K body bags and write off these fuckers in the history. Afterall what is a military coupe for if the forceful drastic measures are not exercised to address the need to a stable state of the kingdom?

Hahaha...Big talk... PAD Porlumpars outnumbered at least 100 to 1.
If push comes to shove, those PAD's will be buying their PR's into Singapore and Malaysia. Thaksin just bidding his time for the old king to go away and he will rule by proxy through that useless Sia O if the Crown Prince is lucky his sister doesn't finish him off.

Don't underestimate that Hakka and don't overestimate the monarchy. This is the internet age where no secrets are hidden anymore.Worse, is a lot of half truths circulating as gospels. The monarchy has been weighed and counted and is found wanting. It is the only institution in the country that is against the majority of the populace from getting a decent livelihood. Who the fcuk wants to live in the middle ages anymore ?

The 90% of the poor were fed the propagandas of the decency and humility of their king all their lives through the longevity of Bhumipol's rule but are they going to be stupid and blurblur in the coming times ? The answer is NO and Thailand is at a crossroad now and the wrong move will be bloodshed and republicanism.

Samak's death is actually Thaksin's boon because of Samak's complicity in the deaths of so many students in the 70's, and thus deprived Thaksin of the intelligentsia's support in the past.

The military is as usual, clumsy and bloated and there are just so many cooks in that small kitchen that is Thailand. They might even start a war with Cambodia just to deflect their own vulnerability.

Thaksin was the only leader in Thailand's history to be elected by the majority of the population without the need of any coalitions and he will win hands down anytime. His policies were coherent and beneficial to the poors and that was what endeared him to those people.

sorry about my ignorance on Thai politics. Let me see if I understand this:

1. Thaksin was a multi-billionaire before he entered politics and become PM. He is damn bloody rich prior to his entry to politics.

2. After he become PM, he helped the rural poor.

3. He cleaned up Patpong and Suhumvit sleazy business after midnight.

4. He won every election without fraud.

5. All the Thai govt can charge him is a deal involving his wife company?

6. The majority of the Thai still loves him

7. The Bangkok elitists did not get sweet deals and staged a coup against him by getting the protestors to wear yellow shirt, the royal monarchy king's colour, and by invoking the king's name, anyone against them is against the king?

8. Why does the majority Thai don't like the Prince but love the Princess? the les majestes law forbids anyone to speak ill of the prince even if he is immoral? Thai cannot stand a Princess to be head of the country? Are we still living in the Victorian era?

9. who is more ball-less? the majority of 80 million Thais or the 66% of 3 mil singapore citizens?

Bangkok still safe to go for Holiday?

I went there, when they were protesting at the government house, as long as you do not wander into the trouble spot, should be fine. The majority of the inhabitants in Bangkok, just want to get on with their lives, make money, eat, enjoy, make love...

Fortunately, if I had gone, a week later, I would have gotten stuck at the airport, that is worrying, but I think the Thai's had realized this mistake.

Anyway..just stay away from Government House, or any government building areas..and ask the people..where not to go.

It is generally safe!..

BANGKOK - SUPPORTERS of exiled former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Wednesday they had postponed indefinitely an anti-government rally due to start this weekend, which had worried investors in financial markets. The red-shirted United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) had planned to hold the rally from Nov 28 to Dec 2 in the historic heart of Bangkok, with marches on key roads in the capital, to press its demand for fresh elections. 'We want to show responsibility for the country and show our loyalty to the king. So the red shirts have decided to postpone the protest indefinitely,' a UDD leader, Veera Musikapong, told reporters. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 81, has been in hospital since Sept 19. The country holds big celebrations at the start of December to mark his birthday on Dec 5. Some analysts had said any chaos or violence ahead of the royal celebrations might have backfired against Thaksin, especially among his more moderate supporters. Veera said the UDD leadership would meet again in mid-December to decide what its next move would be. -- REUTERS
