Football ref attacked by gunmen

Published: 4 Sep 2013 at 11.59

A high-profile Thai Premier League football referee was shot and seriously injured in Bangkok on Wednesday morning, police said.

Pol Lt Col Komen Suphap, deputy superintendent of Hua Mak police station, said Thanom Borikut was ambushed about 5.45am in front of a dormitory at the Sports Authority of Thailand headquarters on Ramkhamhaeng Road, Bangkok.

The 40-year-old ref was shot twice in the body and once in the right arm. He was rushed to Ramkhamhaeng Hospital, and was now in a safe condition.

Witnesses told investigators that two people wearing helmets approached Mr Thanom on a motorcycle and fired several shots at him before fleeing.

Mr Thanom is a Thai Premier League referee and his in-game decisions have been widely criticised by many football fans.

He is also one of the core members who last month tried to obstruct football club representatives from participating in a meeting to discuss Fifa's revised regulations.
