For many decades after being coronated, the Thai King managed to pull the wool over the thai people with his acts of benevolence, a patron of the commoners, especially for the farmers and so on. As Confuseous pointed out earlier, these are just wayangs to win over the hearts of the people when actually, beneath all that kindness, is a very cunning and scheming man. A man who wants to hold sway over its people regardless of who the PM is; such that allegiance is only paid to him. But cracks start to appear during the nineties as the people became more sosphicated in thinking and analytical. And when Thaksin came into the scene, he did what the King has been doing all this while, like helping the poor in the agriculture sector many a times with cash. The King felt his role being usurped and threatened. The rest is what you've seen unfold between the Yellow and Red Shirts. The King is behind it, many thais know it. And that's why his popularity has been waning. It will look like the monarch era will end with his death. I believe the thais have had enough of this.
