Chaikiri Srifuengfung, a businessman whose family developed Thai-Asahi Glass, was found dead on Thursday at his luxury condominium off Soi Sukhumvit 31. He died from a single gunshot wound, apparently self-inflicted, police said.
Senior investigator Pol Maj-General Itthiphol Phiriyaphinyo, also a deputy Bangkok police chief, said later that the suspected suicide was carried out with a single shot to the head. It is likely Chaikiri took his own life after facing business problems and family conflicts.
Interviews with members of the Srifuengfung family were ongoing, he added.
Citing people who were close to Chaikiri, 69, the officer said he had been distressed and was heard to say "I want to be alone" shortly before the gunshot was heard. Itthiphol said Chaikiri was found sitting in a chair leaning back with a 38-calibre pistol in his hand.
Media and paramedics were restricted from entering the Kiat Thani Mansion City compound. His body was sent to Chulalongkorn Hospital for an autopsy.
