BEIJING -- Word circulated at the recent Beijing International Automotive Exhibition that the Tesla Model 3, an electric four-door compact sedan, will adopt a Chinese-made motor in addition to a battery.

A number of Chinese companies are regarded as capable of supplying motors to Tesla. One candidate is Suzhou Inovance Automotive, which according to a securities house analysis has already supplied motors to emerging Chinese electric vehicle makers such as WM Motor Technology Group and Li Auto. Starting with Tesla, Inovance is set to add major foreign EV producers to its customer list.

Tesla has already adopted batteries produced by Chinese supplier Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), a strong rival of Japan's Panasonic and South Korea's LG Chem, which have been supplying batteries to the American electric-car maker.

Chinese companies are emerging as suppliers of not only batteries but also other components for electric vehicles. A Chinese research firm reported that Zhejiang Sanhua Intelligent Controls, a maker of heat-control parts for electric vehicles, has Tesla, Volkswagen and General Motors on its customer list. In addition, Xiamen Hongfa Electroacoustic, which manufacturers electronic parts for EVs, is already doing business with Tesla, VW and Daimler.

In fact, Chinese suppliers of components to major U.S. and European automakers are increasing.

It is wrong to conclude that low prices are the sole attractiveness of Chinese suppliers to automakers. Intense competition in the global market is prompting them to advance their technologies. Tesla has turned to CATL as a supplier of batteries not just because of its low prices but also because of its advanced technology of developing batteries that don't use cobalt, said a person familiar with the matter.

"CALT is leading the world in a certain area of battery technology," said an executive at a Japanese automaker. A German carmaker executive added that Chinese suppliers are indispensable in the procurement of EV components.

Given the expanding Chinese auto components industry, China under the leadership of President Xi Jinping is promoting the creation of Chinese supply chains, replacing its past target of developing automakers capable of competing globally with big Japanese, American and European carmakers. The strategic shift has been prompted by the deepening rift between the U.S. and China and the stagnation of international logistics resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

The shift is closely related to a "dual circulation" policy unveiled by China in July. Although the policy remains vague, it is believed to be pointed at achieving growth mainly in the domestic economy while maintaining synergistic interactions with foreign economies.

China will initially create a huge domestic economic circulation, said professor Xue Lan of Tsinghua University, who is involved in preparation of strategies for the policy, revealing that the world's second-biggest economy will reinforce domestic supply chains.

Meetings held by automobile-related industry groups in China have changed their names to "supply chain" conferences, possibly to reflect the Xi administration's strategic shift.

China is pushing ahead with the creation of supply chains covering roughly half of the global EV market. Sanhua and Hongfa have already captured bigger global market shares than Japanese companies, according to a survey.

There will be no problem if almost all electric vehicle components are made by Chinese companies, said Brian Gu, president of the Chinese EV startup Xiaopeng Motors. At the Beijing motor show, which ended in early October, some people said a day may come soon when all EV parts are manufactured by Chinese companies. The possibility of Tesla cars 100% made in China is growing more realistic.

I don't think a hot war is going to happen anytime soon. The hotly-contested US Pres election is the real war; a civil war in fact. In a hot war with China, many Americans will die and return home in body bags. There will eventually be street protests. As for CCP China they don't bat even an eyelid as their dead soldiers are considered heroes who sacrificed for their country. The commies don't flinch at the sight of body bags. Confirmed no demonstration on the streets of China such as the anti-Vietnam war protests in the USA.

SMIC and Chartered announce alliance on 0.18-micron technology and capacity
21 Dec 2001

Shanghai,China [2001-12-21]

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China's first advanced open-IC foundry, and Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (NASDAQ: CHRT and SGX-ST: Chartered), one of the world's top three silicon foundries, today announced they have entered into an alliance. Upon execution of the detailed agreements, SMIC will receive 0.18-micron baseline logic process technology transfer and be granted patent license rights from Chartered, as Chartered will receive an equity stake and access to capacity in SMIC. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"SMIC is very pleased to be partnering with Chartered, one of the top-tier foundries in the world," said Richard Chang, president and CEO of SMIC. "SMIC is committed to its technology development, and also jointly develops advanced technologies with our partners. Working with a proven technology leader like Chartered will enable us to move quickly along the learning curve. SMIC is well-positioned to complement leading-edge foundries like Chartered with additional, value-added capacity, and customers of both companies truly stand to benefit."

Chartered-SMIC deals could propel China as a premier foundry base

By Mark LaPedus 12.21.2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — China has taken a giant leap forward in becoming a premier silicon foundry base in Asia: the nation's fledging IC makers will finally break the 0.25-micron barrier by moving into the 0.18-micron era.
The shift towards 0.18-micron–and below–technologies among Chinese foundry concerns could one day pose a threat for providers in Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and elsewhere. And there are also signs that China will one day become the price leader in the silicon foundry arena as well.
China took a big step in upgrading its chip industry, when Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd. on Thursday said it will take an equity stake and license its 0.18-micron technology to silicon foundry startup Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) of China.
Under the terms, Chartered will transfer its 0.18-micron baseline logic process technology and grant patent license rights to SMIC, in exchange for an equity stake and access to capacity. SMIC will move its fabs into 0.18-micron production by the end of 2002 (see today’s story ).
The deal is huge for SMIC and China. For years, the U.S. government has prohibited China from importing semiconductor-processing equipment that would enable that nation's IC makers to develop devices below 0.25-micron.

Now, however, fab-equipment export laws will not pose a problem for SMIC, said Joseph Xie, senior director of marketing for the Shanghai-based company. “Technically, we know how to move to 0.18-micron technology, but it will take some time,” Xie said.
In a phone interview, Xie said SMIC can extend its current 0.25-micron tools down to 0.18-micron–and below. SMIC uses 248-nm scanners from ASML Holding N.V., which are capable of 0.18- and 0.15-micron feature sizes and below, sources said.
The exposure tools from ASML and others will help China reach an important milestone: After year's of making “trailing-edge” devices, domestic semiconductor vendors can now develop more advanced chips, according to analysts.
The shift towards more advanced chip processing in China could make it more attractive for foreign chip makers to outsource their IC production in China–at the expense of foundry providers in other Asian nations, according to analysts.
China has another key advantage over rival nations: Many foreign chip makers are looking to embrace Chinese foundries in order to get a foothold in the booming China IC market, according to analysts.
For example, the Chartered-SMIC deal will give Chartered a major foothold in the China market. It also gives SMIC the ability to produce 0.18-micron chips. At present, Shanghai-based SMIC is ramping its initial fab–an 8-inch, 0.25-micron plant.
This deal may also prompt other Chinese chip makers to gain access to 0.18-micron technology as well. This includes domestic foundry players like Shanghai Grace, Shanghai Hua Hong NEC, and others.
For example, Shanghai Hua Hong NEC–a joint foundry venture between Japan's NEC Corp. and China's Hua Hong–for some time has been developing 0.35-0.25-micron chip designs, based on NEC's process technology. The chip venture also uses Nikon Inc.'s deep-UV, 248-nm scanners, which are capable of 0.18-micron processes and below, according to sources.
As a result, the nation presents some new competition in the foundry market, especially for the startups in Korea, Malaysia and elsewhere, many of which are just ramping up their own 0.18-micron processes.
China, of course, is several steps behind the foundry giants in Taiwan and Singapore, which are scrambling to ramp up their new and leading-edge 0.13-micron process technologies.

Still, Chartered, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) make the bulk of their profits in 0.18-micron wafer processing, analysts said.

This have never happened in the history of cold wars between Super powers , especially a case study between USSR vs US , that went on for more than 60 years

why ?

Because a direct confrontation means neither side wins but both loses

the only place that took place was Korean War where both US and commie forces clashed directly ..Taiwan too quite similar to wanting a united Korea like wise a united Germany , which is already is now , and thus a united 1 China which what the CCP wants but not Taiwan’s people

so , where is the divide ? The divide between Taiwan and mainland was never over ethnicity since both recognises themselves as one but over how people should be governed ...it’s that simple ... here is where we should remember the armed forces of Taiwan is to protect the nation whreas the PLA of China’s is to protect the communist party

now with regards to China invading Taiwan , one must remember here that Taiwan is not governed by communism totalitarian style Nor by dictatorship but by democracy ...and had the people of Taiwan wanted a reunion under a communist governance it would have happened yesterday ..,so , even if China wins Taiwan militarily its not gonna govern it as HK provides a clear case study ...unless China treats a conquered Taiwan like another Tibet or Uighur and treat all Taiwanese as a third rate citizens but that would enrage the 1. 3 local chinese in the mainland causing a civil war

so Taiwan is indeed a hot political potato that China cannot invade that easily or it would not have waited for 70 years

A Chinese car battery-maker says it is ready to manufacture a product capable of powering a vehicle for 1.2 million miles (two million kilometres) across the course of a 16-year lifespan.
By contrast, most automakers only offer warranties ranging from 60,000 to 150,000 miles over a three to eight-year period on their cars' batteries.
Contemporary Amperex Technology has not revealed who it intends to supply.
But it was previously reported that the battery was co-developed with Tesla.
The latest news was revealed in an interview Catl's chairman gave to the Bloomberg news agency.
"If someone places an order, we are ready to produce," it quoted Zeng Yuqun as saying.
He added that it was set, however, to cost a 10% premium over the batteries it already supplies.
The company signed a two-year deal to supply batteries for Tesla's Model 3 cars in February. Its other clients include BMW, Daimler, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.

Trump will do it anyway because the ones to lose the most will be the Democrat Swamp that is so heavily invested in China. Trump is the only US president who delivers his promises, and he promised that he will make China pay a 'big price' for unleashing the Wuhan virus.

On Taiwan, I realized that the majority of Taiwanese media is actually Green-leaning or outright-Green. The DPP seeks to destroy the Republic of China under KMT with the goal of establishing the Republic of Taiwan. The 'democracy' of Taiwan is a facade for the Cold Civil War fought between DPP and KMT, and DPP is winning.

If Xi Jinping wants to be emperor for life, he has to take back Taiwan by force latest by the end of summer in 2022. Trump and Pompeo knows that and that's why they are preparing the US military right now for the coming conflict of 2022.

Tesla disputes Chinese recall of almost 30,000 cars – report | CarAdvice

Chinese authorities claim the cars are suffering from two suspension faults, but Tesla reportedly disagrees.

Tesla has reportedly challenged a recall for almost 30,000 American-made Model X and Model S cars imported into China, disputing claims there is an issue with the vehicles' suspension and instead blaming the problem on "driver abuse".

The recall, lodged with China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) by Tesla Motor's Beijing arm, apparently affects Model X and S cars produced between September 17, 2013 and January 15, 2018, and imported into China.

It outlines two separate alleged suspension issues: the first could see the ball studs of the rear connecting rod of the front suspension crack in the event of a large external impact, while the second could see the the upper connecting rod of the rear suspension deformed or weakened in an accident.

The notice states Tesla will contact owners of the affected vehicles and arrange for free replacement of the affected parts.

Although the original recall claims a total of 29,193 cars are affected by either one or both of the suspension issues, Tesla has reportedly disputed this number – and the recall itself – in a legal letter obtained by Electrek.

The letter, from Tesla's counsel for regulatory affairs, Elizabeth H. Mykytiuk, to North America's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), says Tesla has not determined a defect in the cars, but was unable to officially dispute the recall without facing heavy administration work.

"Due to the opinion of SAMR/DPAC that the topic required a recall in the China market, Tesla was left with the choice of either voluntarily recalling the subject vehicles or carrying a heavy burden through the Chinese administrative process," the letter reads.

"While Tesla disagrees with the opinion of SAMR/DPAC, the Company has decided not to dispute a recall for the China market only."

Instead, Tesla said the issue was caused by "driver abuse" rather than a production defect.

"Tesla has not determined that a defect exists in either the Front Suspension Aft Link or the Rear Suspension Upper Link and believes the root cause of the issue is driver abuse, including that driver usage and expectation for damageability is uniquely severe in the China market," the letter states.

"If the customer inputs an abuse load (e.g., curb impact, severe pothole strike, etc.), then the parts may be damaged, leading either to immediate failure or delayed failure from the compounding effects of the initial abuse and subsequent load input."

The electric carmaker said the occurrence of this component failure was "exceedingly rare", although it conceded it was higher in China than other parts of the world – with approximately 0.1 per cent of cars in China affected, compared with less than 0.05 per cent elsewhere.

Still, Tesla said it would allow the voluntary recall to proceed, determining the recall population to be a total of 18,182 Model X and Model S cars manufactured in the United States but registered in China.

"After discussion with representatives of China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and Defective Product Administrative Center (DPAC), who opined that a recall of the Front Suspension AftLink and Rear Suspension Upper Link was required under local regulations, Tesla, Inc. made the determination to conduct a voluntary recall in China," the letter said.

The recall is China-only, with Tesla explaining it is "not conducting a recall outside of China based upon the Company’s determination that there is no defect in the subject components and no associated safety-risk".
