Tesla stock tumbles after Model S catches fire.

Elon Musk gave more detail in a blog post Friday about the fire that became an Internet sensation and unsettled Tesla investors. He also defended the car's battery technology.

Musk wrote in a blog post Friday that fires are more common in conventional gas-powered vehicles.

"For consumers concerned about fire risk, there should be absolutely zero doubt that it is safer to power a car with a battery than a large tank of highly flammable liquid," Musk wrote.

The CEO said a curved metal component was apparently the culprit in causing a Tesla to catch on fire Tuesday. He says the object's shape led to a powerful hit on the underside of the vehicle, punching a 3-inch hole through an armor plate that protects the car's bottom.

The company said the car properly contained the blaze. The driver was able to exit the highway in the Seattle suburb of Kent before flames engulfed the front of the vehicle.

Of the estimated 194,000 vehicle fires in the U.S. each year, the vast majority are in cars and trucks with gasoline or diesel engines. Electric vehicles make up less than 1 percent of the cars sold in the U.S.

Firefighters struggled to extinguish the Tesla fire, finding that the flames reignited. Crews found that water seemed to intensify the fire, so they began using a dry chemical extinguisher.

After dismantling the front end of the vehicle and puncturing holes in the battery pack, responders used a circular saw to cut an access hole in the front section to apply water to the battery, according to documents. Only then was the fire extinguished.

Tesla shares fell sharply Wednesday and Thursday after a video of the car fire circulated on the Internet. The shares recovered somewhat Friday, rising $7.67, or 4.4 percent, to $180.98. They still finished the week with a loss of $9.92, or 5.2 percent. The shares are still up more about 400 percent.

All makes can catch fire usually
Due to extreme circumstances
Careless users pushing limits
If happen to Honda or Mercedes
Most will dismiss as one off event

Tesla is different cos it's electric
New and untested technology
Such events can dent confidence
And stock price beyond repair
May even affect whole sector
BYD included not just Tesla

All cars are electric. It's what ignites the fuel and/or drives all the instrumentation.

Cars don't need to be pushed to the limit in order catch fire. All it takes is a short circuit.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/road-safety/8323396/Car-fire-dangers.html

"the Communities and Local Government office figures reveal, 68 per cent of the 12,000 accidental car fires were caused by vehicle defects with "wire and battery" problems sparking the lion's share. Only seven per cent of car fires were caused by crashes."

The Tesla car reaction just illustrates the stupidity of the majority of mankind.

Excuse me sir, when we say it is an all-electric car
As opposed to a conventional one what we mean
Is that the car is PROPELLED solely by electric motor
That the motor is powered solely by batteries
Recharged through being connected to mains
As opposed to air combustion engines
Refueled by going to the petrol station

The fact that conventional cars may have features
Activated by electronics or engines that are hybrid
Does not qualify them for the coveted label

Once electricity is involved, a short circuit is a real possibility.

It's called an electrical fire.

Ever lit farts before? They ignite too. Wonder when they going to build a fart propelled car.

Cheers!

Ever lit farts before? They ignite too. Wonder when they going to build a fart propelled car.

1. Not all farts are capable of being ignited.

“Hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane are all produced in the gut and contribute 74% of the volume of flatus in normal subjects. Methane and hydrogen are flammable, and so flatus containing adequate amounts of these can be ignited. However, not all humans produce flatus that contains methane. For example, in one study of the faeces of nine adults, only five of the samples contained archaea capable of producing methane.”

2. Fart propelled cars would be not just environmentally unfriendly but disastrous. The whole point of building electric cars is to protect the environment, otherwise why bother.

“Methane in the Earth's atmosphere is an important greenhouse gas with a global warming potential of 25 compared to CO2 over a 100-year period (although accepted figures probably represent an underestimate). This means that a methane emission will have 25 times the effect on temperature of a carbon dioxide emission of the same mass over the following 100 years. And methane has 33 times the effect when accounted for aerosol interactions.”

More expensive, but environmentally friendly ......

Third Tesla luxury Model S has caught fire after a crash in just two months.

The latest fire happened in Tennessee on Wednesday. The first fire happened in Washington State in October and the second was reported to have occurred in Mexico later that same month. A Tesla spokeswoman said the automaker is unaware of any other fires in Tesla cars. There are currently 19,000 Model S cars in use globally, according to Tesla.

"We have been in contact with the driver, who was not injured and believes the car saved his life," Tesla said in a statement. "Our team is on its way to Tennessee to learn more about what happened in the accident. We will provide more information when we're able to do so."

The name of the driver and details of incident were not immediately available.

Tesla (TSLA)'s stock has fallen about 7% Thursday. The company also recently reported disappointing third quarter financial results.

In the first U.S. incident, the car's battery was punctured by a piece of metal lying on the road. The Model S' battery pack lies in the floor of the car. When the battery was punctured it caused a fire that consumed the front portion of the vehicle. The fire did not enter the passenger compartment which is protected by internal firewalls, according to Tesla.

The federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration decided not to investigate the Model S for fire safety concerns after that incident. The agency said Thursday that it has not yet determined whether it will investigate following this latest fire.

Tesla's stock has plunged from its high of $195 on 30th Sept to last Friday closing of $134.
