Mdm Tan Suang, the mother of Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, died on Sunday morning. She was 89.

Mdm Tan's late husband was Mr Teo Cheng Guan, the former chairman and chief executive officer of OCBC Bank.

The couple raised their four children to "work hard and not to expect things to come (their) way in life," said DPM Teo in a 1996 interview with The New Paper.

Then a secretary, Mdm Tan insisted on teaching shorthand and typing skills to her children: her three daughters Hee Lian, Chai Lian and Swee Lian, and only son DPM Teo.

Teo Chee Hean's father Teo Cheng Guan was given a job by Tan Chin Tuan in OCBC after the war...Teo Cheng Guan subsequently met his wife who was also working in OCBC and got married and gave birth to Teo Chee Hean

Teo Cheng Guan rose all the way to the top and was Chairman of OCBC from 1989 to 1991.

After leaving Cabinet in 1991, Dr Tan returned to OCBC. He took over from DPM Teo’s father and served as Chairman of OCBC from 1992 to 1995.
