Reuters has a pretty unusual story this morning on what it describes as a $200 million hedge fund operating inside Chesapeake Energy (CHK) for at least four years, from 2004 to 2008. The stock is down 8.7% to $17.90 in premarket trading, as at least one analyst describes the company’s guidance as “gassy” — more on that below.The wire service says chief executive Aubrey McClendon, who recently said he would step down from the company’s chairmanship, ran “a lucrative business on the side” that traded in the same commodities that Chesapeake produces. The story quotes a person it calls “a veteran trader” who helped run Heritage Management Company LLC, which listed Chesapeake’s headquarters in Oklahoma City as its mailing address. The trader said McClendon had ”near daily” communications and “exhaustive” phone calls pertaining to the fund. Reuters also claims that the fund “earned McClendon and Ward management fees and a cut of profits from outside investors.” While it would hardly be news for a leading commodity producer to be active in the market for its own products, the method by which Reuters asserts it was done is what seems unusual. We put a line into Chesapeake’s spokesman, who referred us to Mr. McClendon’s own spokesman. “Having made a supplemental FWPP disclosure last week, Mr. McClendon is not going to comment further on his personal investments at this time,” the spokesman said in an e-mailed statement. Not really surprising, they have a track record of investing in 3rd world comanies: Thaksin, Indonesian companies, Chinese companies, etc. Many of these companies have less than stellar backgrounds I often wonder why Temasek doesn't just stick to respectable companies

The reason is that most of the deals are not sourced by their own in house stock analyst. Rather, they are brokered by 3rd party businessmen who earn a commission when the deal is done. Some of these brokers are real sweet talkers, tell Ho Ching what a hotty she is, etc. They give a set of books to Temasek to anaylse, but really, what should be happening is the other way round. Temasek should use sound business practice to identify companies that are worth buying, just like what Warren Buffet does. Buffet does not pay any third party broker fees. He does his own analysis. Of course, these brokers will kick something back to certain Temasek directors to sweeten the deal. This is how business is done in corruption free singapore.
