A Virginia neighborhood is grappling with the "ultimate tragedy": the death of a 16-year-old boy killed by a homeowner when he accidentally entered the wrong house early Sunday—one just two doors down from his own. Caleb Gordley was grounded for not cleaning his room but sneaked out Saturday night to go to a party, reports the Washington Post. He then had to sneak back in, so his friends helped him climb in through a back window. But he'd been drinking and picked the wrong house, which looked similar to his own. When the burglar alarm went off, the homeowner found Gordley on the stairs. He says he warned the teen to leave and fired a warning shot, but when Gordley didn't stop, the homeowner shot and killed him, an official says.

"They have the exact same staircase as us, the exact same carpet. Caleb clearly thought he was in his own house," says the boy's father. "He probably stumbled around and was just trying to go to his room." Friends and family say Gordley wasn't a troublemaker, but an athlete with many friends who typically obeyed his parents and did well in school; in a statement the family acknowledges he made a tragic "mistake." Locals say the homeowner is a good neighbor and a longtime volunteer firefighter, and friends add that the two families were barely acquainted. No charges have been filed, and the Post notes that Virginia legal precedent is on the homeowner's side.

Having said that, in a country that allows guns, there isn't any smart ppl around!

go read up how many governments have oppressed and exterminated their own people after implementation of gun control.................

Where to read up on that? Have a link?

need to go rense.com to search................

gun ownership may result in more people killed either in crimes or in accidents...............but not that many people are killed yearly.................

it's far better than having oppressed by government....................

if S'pore like USA....................you think PAP will be so oppressive towards us ?.........after a few (un)successful assassination attempts......even LKY also scared liao

It's not the guns. It's the people. Just a short look at gun crime in neighbouring Canada will tell you that it's not guns that kill people. PEOPLE DO.

At least make it hard for those people to kill by making it hard for them to get their hands on guns...right now it's a joke.

Apart from freak accidents, like the one we just read, most of the shootings are crime related. Since its criminals that we're dealing with, passing a law that restricts their ownership of guns isn't going to stop them, is it?? It's going to take away guns from law-abiding citizens, leaving them even more at the mercy of these criminals...

By your argument, why stop at guns and grenades?

Why don't they let responsible people buy nuclear bombs?

Nothing shocking.

It would be shocking if the title read "Teen Killed After Accidentally Entering Neighbour".

Thats an extension of your logic. Both kills, only that the latter kills much more. The responsible people argument is flawed. Guns leave the "responsible people" supply and custody chain to the wider community. The guy who shot the toddlers in school got it from his responsible mum.

That's not my argument. And a gun isn't the same as a nuclear bomb.

Yes. Probably. But banning guns is not the answer.
