I thought teachers are supposed to be Civil Servant. Civil Servants can 'Moonlight' meh. :*:

The pap garbermen can decide when rules can be bendy rules as required. There are numerous examples: Compulsory NS for all citizens except for citizens like Patrick; PSC scholars must serve the civil service upon graduation except for scholars like Li; .......... hee hee.

the actual question should be: how on earth does the teacher find the time to give tuition?
seen a teacher at work? this is what i gather from friends and acquaintances alike.

1. administration: ranging from daily attendance taking to collection of MCs, letters of excuses etc, letters for CCAs, CCA payments, chasing students for fee payments.
2. CCA duties: once a week, not inclusive of meetings with trainers/vendors to discuss schedule, GeBiz for tenders, budget planning, logistic planning, etc.
3. marking: tonnes of it. generally 4 classes of 40 scripts/class per homework given.
4. meetings: staff meeting, level meeting, committee meeting, CCA meeting, Learning Circles or Professional Development meetings, meetings with vendors for CCA, meeting parents.
5. preparation: lesson planning for lesson delivery, slides/videos/worksheets, etc.
6. project involvements: no thanks to something like WITS project in the army, the education fraternity also embarked on silly projects like these.
7. teaching: handling 40 kids at the same time is never easy, so they said

given that all of us spend 24hrs a day, my friends from the education sector don't seem to have a life :p

In order to compensate teachers income, MOE will increase teachers pay. this is just the prelude to teachers pay hike!

SINGAPORE: The Education Ministry (MOE) is reviewing its policy of allowing teachers to give private tuition.

Under existing guidelines, teachers can give up to six hours of tuition per week.

Tuition centre operators Channel NewsAsia spoke to said that if the rules are tightened, the pay of tutors and in turn, tuition fees, may have to be raised.

Operators said parents prefer MOE-trained teachers and if rules are tightened, the demand and pay for such tutors may increase.

Max Tan, director of True Learning Centre, said: "Many tuition centres will be willing to pay higher. We will have to compete with other tuition centres. As a result, you may see that these full-time tutors will be earning much more."

The centre said that under such circumstances, tuition fees may then have to be raised.

But this is likely to affect only agencies with a large pool of current MOE teachers as its tutors.

Another agency Channel NewsAsia spoke to said it is not expecting to raise fees, as less than 20 per cent of its tutors are teachers.

Contrary to belief, many teachers do find time to give tuition when they really want to make that extra money.

As for the list of duties you highlighted, some of those admin functions have been taken off the hands of teachers and given to the allied educators (AEDs) to do.
For CCA duties, many teachers do not even turn up for the duration of the CCA training, at most just appearing at the start and then going back to the staff room for the next 3 hours or so when the CCA is running, especially now that many CCAs are outsourced to external trainers and coaches. Unless you are a subject or department head, you don't actually do any budget or logistics planning.
Many schools are now heavily staffed in the general office management side with VPs for Admin, Admin Managers and Operations Managers with some schools having more than one for each of these positions. A lot of the admin, operations and logistics stuff are handled by these positions now. In fact, a lot of schools are quite top-heavy when it comes to management ranks now.
Once you have been teaching the same subject for a number of years, there isn't much lesson planning anymore as it is mostly rehashing of stuff that you have been using previously.

Many teachers like to lament that they don't have a life but isn't that true in most professions if you work in Singapore?
